Cyberfrags ’69 is an arena shooter that has been available on Steam since 2021 for around $4, but it has now become permanently free to play. While Steam users may welcome another free game to add to their collections, the story behind this change is a little sad.

Since its launch, Cyberfrags ’69 has maintained over 90% positive user reviews and received regular updates until around 2023. Despite remaining in early access, the niche movement shooter built a small but loyal community that continued to wait for its full release. However, life had other plans. Solo developer David, better known as D.A.S., struggled to work consistently on the project and has finally decided to just release the game as-is and make it free to play for everyone.

Cyberfrags ’69 Is Now 100% Free to Play on Steam

As of October 7, Steam users have been able to download and play Cyberfrags ’69 completely free of charge. The developer explained the decision, saying, “Since I can’t seem to keep consistent work on this, I’ve officially released Cyberfrags ’69 as a free-to-play game.” The gameplay is all about speed. As a fast-paced shooter, it requires players to keep moving around the map and maintain their momentum through wall-running, sliding, and double-jumping. Some veteran fans have described Cyberfrags ’69 as a mashup of Titanfall 2 and Quake 3 Arena, but D.A.S. has managed to give the game its own unique and quirky soul.

Players can move at nearly 100 feet per second, making quick reactions essential to survival.

Weapon design is one of Cyberfrags ’69‘s best features. Players can choose from dozens of weapons, each with a secondary ability that can change how they play. Most of these abilities enhance movement or introduce new mechanics, helping make each match feel distinct. However, fans should note that Cyberfrags ’69 is far from a mainstream multiplayer FPS. Players can move at nearly 100 feet per second, making quick reactions essential to survival.

Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.

Despite coming from a solo developer, Cyberfrags ’69 is one of those FPS games that some players can’t get enough of. It features a single-player mode, has co-op support, and offers plenty of PvP game modes, including familiar options like Team Deathmatch, Free-for-All, and Capture the Flag. For players who enjoy having something to work toward as they earn skill and experience points, Cyberfrags ’69 also offers unlockable weapon skins.

As for the game’s future, developer D.A.S. hasn’t been entirely clear. He has mentioned the possibility of returning to the project, but nothing is set in stone. The good news is that Cyberfrags ’69 is in good shape, having even received a small pre-launch patch in early October that fixed some of its most glaring issues. Now that the game is free to play on Steam, it remains to be seen whether more arena shooter fans and FPS players who enjoy high-speed gameplay will give it the attention it deserves.
