Sega has been secretive about its plans for the next Sonic the Hedgehog game, but a new rumor suggests that the company is working on a remake of Sonic CD. Over the last few years, Sega has adopted an annual release schedule for Sonic the Hedgehog games; for example, 2025 saw the release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Sonic x Shadow Generations came out in 2024, and Sonic Superstars debuted in 2023. However, the company’s plans for 2026 have remained a mystery

Sonic Superstars was a disappointment for Sega, both critically and commercially. The game was the first new 2D entry in the series since 2017’s Sonic Mania, and many fans clearly preferred the latter. At this point, Sega’s plans for future 2D Sonic games are a mystery, and there are lots of questions about how the publisher will handle them. Many fans prefer the pixel art style seen in classic Sonic games, but Sega seems intent on using the kind of 3D character models that appeared in Sonic Superstars.

New Sonic Frontiers Release Has Leaked Online

According to a new leak, Sega appears to be planning a new release for Sonic Frontiers, a 3D Sonic game first released in 2022.

Rumors Indicate a Potential Comeback for Sonic CD

Former Sega executive Mike Fischer has shared rumors that the publisher is working on a remake of Sonic CD, also noting that it’s his “favorite Sonic game.” He’s not alone in that, as Sonic CD is generally held in high regard among fans of the franchise. The game is a fairly important one as well, because it introduced two important characters in the Sonic canon. Metal Sonic is one of Sonic’s greatest rivals, and the villain first debuted in Sonic CD. The game also saw the introduction of Amy Rose.

While Fischer did not offer any evidence to support his claims, there’s a significant reason to believe that a remake of Sonic CD could be in development. Metal Sonic and Amy will appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is set to arrive in theaters on March 19, 2027. Sonic CD featured time travel elements, and the ending of the previous movie suggests that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will serve as a loose adaptation of the game. A remake of Sonic CD released to coincide with the new movie would make a lot of sense. The publisher did something similar when it released Sonic x Shadow Generations, which came out around the same time Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrived in theaters, so there is precedent.

Paramount

Sonic CD was included in 2022’s Sonic Origins, so the game is widely available on current platforms. That said, a remake would give the game a chance to find a new audience. Sega has used remakes as part of its strategy to release annual Sonic games, but the company has typically done this with remasters and remakes of 3D games like Sonic Colors. It’s hard to say how Sega would improve on Sonic CD, or what kind of content the company might add to flesh out the overall package.

If a remake of Sonic CD is in development, there’s a possibility that Sega will officially reveal it over the next few weeks. If the game is coming out before the end of 2026, Sega will want to start the hype cycle soon. That would likely still be the case if the game is set for early 2027, closer to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. For now, Sonic fans will just have to wait patiently to see what gets revealed.
