Third-party publishers have promised big support for the Switch 2, but a year after launch, some games have taken a while to get there. The good news is that while Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s developers said it’s been hard to get the hit 2025 RPG ported over, Diablo 4 is reportedly set to arrive sometime in September.
According to leaker billbil-kun at Dealabs Magazine, Blizzard’s action-RPG will arrive on Nintendo’s platform three years after launch, around the week of September 15. It’ll be $70, but it remains unclear if the Switch 2 version, which will sadly be a code in a box, includes the most recent Lord of Hatred expansion.
If this report is accurate, it’ll be nice to finally be able to play the demon-fueled loot grind on a handheld (it’s verified on Steam Deck, but good luck finding one of those at an affordable price these days). Why has it taken this long to get one of the most popular Xbox-owned games of the last few years on Switch 2? Who knows.
“It’s nice the Switch 2 has the performance that can run a game like Diablo 4, so yeah, it’s something to look at for sure,” former franchise head Rod Fergusson said about the prospect of porting it to Nintendo’s device in an interview last year. “I think the challenge is less around the hardware and just about how we…you know, live services on Switch have been a little bit challenging in the past.”
It was an explanation that didn’t really make sense at the time since always-online multiplayer games like Warframe and Fortnite were also on Switch. But Diablo 4 is far from the only major port to be slow going. Asked why Clair Obscur still isn’t on the Switch 2, its developers recently pointed to unsupported Unreal Engine 5 features and a “big technical challenge” that would take time to pull off.
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, originally expected last year, will finally arrive on Switch 2 next month. And the much-promoted Borderlands 4 port is completely on ice with no current release plans. A Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds, meanwhile, appears to be moving forward with a possible announcement coming in the next few months.
