10 years after its original launch, Mafia 3 has just received a major update. This latest Mafia 3 update has given the game a sweeping round of technical improvements, and has delivered native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
Released on October 7, 2016, Mafia 3 was met with a mixed critical reception upon its debut. On OpenCritic, Mafia 3 earned a Top Critic Average of 66 and a critic recommendation score of just 27%, giving it a ‘Fair’ rating overall. While many critics praised Mafia 3‘s storytelling and character work, the open-world gameplay was commonly criticized for feeling uninspired and too repetitive. That mixed critical reception didn’t stop Mafia 3 from being a commercial success, however, with the open-world crime game having sold more than seven million copies by March 2020.
Mafia 3 Gets Native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Ports
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mafia 3, publisher 2K and developer Hangar 13 have just released native next-gen ports of the game for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. These native next-gen ports finally bring 60FPS to Mafia 3 on console, alongside technical improvements and some quality-of-life upgrades, such as better NPC AI behavior and improved achievement/trophy tracking. These quality-of-life and general technical improvements are also now available in the PC version of Mafia 3.
Mafia 3‘s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version is completely free to anyone who owns the original version of the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. This includes anyone who’s purchased one of the Mafia collections that contains Mafia 3, such as the Trilogy Pack or the Omertà Collection. Something important to note, however, is that players with a pre-existing Mafia 3 save file on PS4 or Xbox One won’t be able to transfer their data to the new PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Those looking to purchase Mafia 3‘s new PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports from scratch can do so for $29.99, though there’s currently an 80% reduction that drops the price to $5.99 for a limited time.
Will Mafia 2 Get a Native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Port?
Shortly before 2K and Hangar 13 officially announced Mafia 3‘s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports, a rumor predicting the ports’ existence hit the r/PS5 subreddit. This leak claimed to have found brand-new ESRB listings for Mafia 2 Definitive Edition and Mafia 3 Definitive Edition, both for the PS5. These ESRB listings were quickly taken down, and hours later, Mafia 3‘s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports were formally revealed. There’s currently no official word on if Mafia 2 will receive the same next-gen treatment.
Back in August, Mafia: Definitive Edition received a similar PS5 and Xbox Series X/S update. This major patch added 60FPS, improved loading times, and fixed a wealth of technical issues. Mafia 2 is now the only entry in the series to not have a dedicated next-gen port.
