Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced game director Richard Knight has revealed how using the Anvil engine, previously used for AC Shadows, has improved the upcoming remake. The developer provided multiple examples of how Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will benefit from utilizing a far more modern engine than that of 2013’s Black Flag.

After years of rumors, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was finally confirmed in April, with a July 9, 2026, release date set. Fans had been asking for a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag for a long time, as it is one of the most popular entries in the series to date. By the time of its announcement, it was one of gaming’s worst-kept secrets, having suffered numerous leaks over the years. That said, it still didn’t diminish fan excitement for the game.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the long-awaited remake of Ubisoft’s iconic pirate adventure is finally ready to be revealed.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Director Says Anvil Engine ‘At the Heart’ of Remake

In a recent Reddit AMA, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced game director Richard Knight responded to a question regarding how much the technology from AC Shadows helped in the remake. Knight said, “The Anvil engine at the heart of Shadows is at the heart of Black Flag Resynced too, giving us access to everything from Raytracing and RTGI to better sound, dynamic weather, destructible objects and more. And specifically for Black Flag Resynced, the Anvil watertech team has been a critical part of the experience in giving us the best naval experience yet.” It was obvious from the first trailer that Black Flag Resynced was going to be a visually stunning game, but hearing how the new engine is helping improve naval combat is the best possible news. It’s the defining feature of the original Black Flag, and if Ubisoft can improve on it with the remake, then fans are in for a treat.

That’s not to mention the obvious visual upgrade that the Anvil engine represents. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is among the games with the best graphics right now. Even among those who weren’t the biggest fans of the game, its graphics are undeniable. With the vibrant colors of the Caribbean and its islands, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is going to be a visual feast.

Since Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s initial reveal, players have been given a much better idea of what to expect from the remake, with features being confirmed or denied on a regular basis. It has already been said that Black Flag Resynced won’t feature the multiplayer or DLC from the original game, nor will it have the modern-day sections. It’s good for Ubisoft to set these expectations early, so that players aren’t disappointed upon release.

It was claimed recently that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced isn’t the only remake in development in the series. At this point, the franchise is nearly two decades old, and for many years was an annual release. That means there are plenty of candidates for a remake, especially when looking at how far the series has come since its early roots.
