One of my favorite things about The Witcher 3 Remastered is how it has revived the long-lost tail of low-poly pigeon, a rare beast that quickly became the game’s unofficial mascot back when it was first discovered shortly after the next-gen version released in 2022. Now low-poly pigeon is back with a vengeance thanks to a new mod.
It’s called “Low-Poly Pigeon – The Revenge” and it replaces every griffon in the game with a giant version of the PS2-looking pigeon. Modder grapedia wrote in the description:
For years, the low-poly pigeon was a joke. People posted him on the internet, turned him into memes, used him as a reaction image and laughed at his tiny body, vacant stare and heroic lack of polygons. He saw all of it. Every post. Every edit. Every comment. And he could not do anything about it. He was just a pigeon. He could only stand there, quietly cooing, while the entire internet made fun of him. But humiliation has a way of building up, and eventually even the most harmless bird reaches his breaking point.
When The Witcher 3 Remastered released at the end of last month, players briefly thought CD Projekt had changed the pigeon asset to make it look as detailed as everything else in the game. Fans declared low-poly pigeon dead and tributes to the majestic monster went viral.
But news of low-poly pigeon’s demise turned out to be greatly exaggerated. While CDPR did buff the graphics for pigeons standing on the ground, those in flight are still just as bizarrely lo-fi looking as ever. The good news is that the fear of losing low-poly pigeon inspired grapedia to release a long-overdue mod that finally celebrates the meme in-game in a way that actually makes sense.
“Every griffin encounter, every hunt and every supposedly terrifying aerial attack is now carried out by the same bird you once laughed at,” the modder wrote “Their sounds have also been replaced with pigeon cooing, so they will calmly announce their arrival before trying to kill you. He could not fight back on the internet. He could not stop the memes. But here, in the Northern Realms, things are different. The pigeon finally has claws, wings, several thousand hit points and absolutely nothing left to lose.”
Witcher 3 players are pleased. “Never even knew this meme was a thing until now but this is peak,” read one response. “Witcher 3 finally playable,” another decaled.
