Even though it’s years away, we already know what Bethesda‘s next game will be after it’s done working on The Elder Scrolls 6. The Elder Scrolls 6 is the next game from Bethesda Game Studios, having first been announced all the way back in 2018. The reason the wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 has been such a long one is Bethesda has been busy working on other projects, namely the open world sci-fi game Starfield.
Starfield was released in 2023 and earned mostly positive reviews. Many praised it for successfully translating Bethesda’s tried-and-true formula to a new setting and genre, but there’s no denying that the game simply hasn’t enjoyed the same kind of staying power as some of the studio’s other projects, like its Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. While Bethesda has teased that there is more on the way for Starfield, most of the studio is currently dedicated to working on The Elder Scrolls 6.

Based on Bethesda’s release cadence, the earliest fans should expect to see The Elder Scrolls 6 is some time in 2028, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the game came out a little later than expected. The Elder Scrolls 6 has been a long time coming and has extremely high expectations to meet, and so Bethesda will no doubt want to make sure that the game lives up to the hype. Delays are common for projects of this size, and so while the game will hopefully be out before the decade is over, fans shouldn’t get too excited until we’ve actually seen more of it in action. But when Bethesda is done working on The Elder Scrolls 6, we know that the studio will be turning its attention to Fallout 5.
Todd Howard previously confirmed that Fallout 5 will be Bethesda’s next game after The Elder Scrolls 6. Fallout 5 will almost certainly not release until some time in the 2030s, and so fans should keep that in mind, but it is nice to know what’s next for Bethesda after it’s wrapped development on Elder Scrolls 6. What exactly Fallout 5 will bring to the table remains to be seen, but it will potentially be coming nearly 20 years after Fallout 4, so like with ES6, expectations are going to be through the roof.
While fans have some long waits ahead of them when it comes to both Fallout 5 and Elder Scrolls 6, there are other releases that should help fill the void. Bethesda has confirmed that classic Fallout games are getting remastered, with both Fallout 3 and New Vegas set to be remastered. Bethesda’s partner on New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment, is also now under the Bethesda umbrella, and it is working on a new Fallout game itself.
Fans can also look forward to new Fallout 76 expansions and other content drops from Bethesda while they wait to learn more about The Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 5, and all the company’s future projects.
