After just one day, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has found itself being review-bombed by players. Many in the community aren’t happy about a ton of things in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and are sharing their frustration via the game’s Steam reviews.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was controversial from the outset. The decision to go with back-to-back Black Ops games wasn’t exactly popular, and led many to question how new the game would feel, especially being developed by the same studios as Black Ops 6. However, it did seem that Treyarch and Raven Software were making player-friendly decisions, publicly declaring their intention to ditch the controversial skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, as well as a renewed focus on more grounded cosmetics this time around. With stronger competition from Battlefield 6 this year, it felt like a necessary route for Call of Duty to take.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Falls To ‘Mixed’ Steam Reviews
Regardless, players still aren’t best pleased with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. The game’s Steam reviews have already fallen to Mixed, with just 44% of the ones so far being positive. A lot of the criticism stems from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7‘s campaign, which, it recently emerged, is always online and does not allow players to pause. Even some of the positive reviews highlight the campaign as a low point, with one user describing it as the “worst campaign of all time.”
Also highlighted by players is Black Ops 7‘s alleged use of AI art for Calling Cards, on which Activision recently commented on and did not deny. The use of AI in games is becoming increasingly contentious, especially as the technology becomes more prominent. And while it’s a small part of the reason that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is being review-bombed at the moment, it surely won’t be the last game to face the same fate for similar reasons.
Overall, the wider critical reception to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has fared about the same, with most describing it as a par-for-the-course entry in the series. And while the game’s Steam player count is struggling, too, Treyarch still has time to make things better in future updates. As with all recent Call of Duty games, it’s fair to assume that Black Ops 7 has a 12-month content roadmap lined up before the inevitable 2026 release.
