Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been an interesting game to follow from the moment it was unveiled, and it seems like Season 3 will be no different. With a staggering 8 maps releasing across Season 3 — half of which are remastered classics — multiplayer fans have a lot to look forward to. BO7’s experimental Endgame mode being made free-to-play could inject some new life into the Extraction Shooter-like experience, while Warzone continues to get a good deal of love. And even the most frustrated Call of Duty Zombies player would have to admit that Season 3 is doing right by the community, though it may be too little too late for that dissatisfied group.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies was fairly well received up until the reveal of DLC 2: Paradox Junction. For many, yet another Nuketown map in place of something original was devastating, especially given how little the map did to expand on the location. Alpha Omega, BO4 Zombies’ take on Black Ops’ most famous multiplayer map, had plenty of new areas to explore thanks to the bunker below Nuketown. Paradox Junction, on the other hand, features two versions of the narrow Nuketown playspace with only a few extra areas. Add on the Blundergat and returning Plaguehounds and the map was heavily criticized for feeling like a filler release full of recycled assets, creating a clear feeling of disappointment within the CoD Zombies community. And, if history is anything to go by, that feeling might be impossible to shake.
Adding to the disappointment of Paradox Junction is that it seemingly replaced the concept for a nuked New York map. Though this is just speculation from players, the theory that another Nuketown map happened due to budget cuts following BO7’s poor sales certainly feels believable.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Players Can Claim a Free Operator Bundle, But They Need to Act Fast
With the release of Season 3 imminent, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 players have the chance to claim a new Operator Bundle completely free of charge.
Paradox Junction Feels Like the Tomb All Over Again
What’s so upsetting about Paradox Junction is that it feels like history is repeating itself. Black Ops 7 Zombies was met with a solid reception at launch, with many satisfied with Ashes of the Damned and its follow-up Astra Malorum. Unfortunately, since Paradox Junction, negativity has been running rampant, with the game being bashed at every turn on places like the CoD Zombies subreddit. While social media platforms and forums may represent a vocal minority, the sentiment that CoD Zombies peaked in BO3 and that modern Zombies keeps failing to recapture that same magic seems too common to ignore at this point. The latest batch of complaints also lines up perfectly with BO6 Zombies’ own descent into negativity, which could very well be a sign of BO7’s future.

BO7 Zombies is essentially mirroring its predecessor; BO6 launched with the well-received Terminus and Liberty Falls, then the even more beloved Citadelle Des Morts. Unfortunately, the hype died down fast with The Tomb, which was small, lacked a unique Wonder Weapon, told a side story with little impact on the main narrative, and felt like a step down from the game’s previous maps. Treyarch followed up The Tomb with the phenomenal Shattered Veil, one of the best maps that has come to the mode in years, but it felt like a lot of players had given up in the game by that point. Sadly, it’s hard not to worry that, no matter how hard Treyarch tries with Season 3 and beyond, the failure of Paradox Junction could see the Zombies team struggling to recapture the spark of BO7’s early days.

Zombies has been a Call of Duty staple for well over a decade now. The games on this list feature the best iterations of the addictive horror mode.
BO7 Zombies May Already Be a Dead Game Walking (But Hopefully It Isn’t)
Since Shattered Veil being so great wasn’t enough to improve the perception of BO6, there’s reason to believe that Season 3 Reloaded’s Totenreich won’t be enough to get BO7 players hyped again. There are already players calling it a lazy Call of the Dead clone purely because it features a Lighthouse, and while this is undoubtedly a bad faith take, the sad reality is that public perception can make a world of difference. Games like Concord and Highguard died fast, largely because the internet decided they weren’t worthwhile even though they had potential. And now, Bungie’s excellent Marathon is struggling largely because of grifting. With BO7’s player count already lower than that of other CoD games, the continued bashing of Zombies could push potential players away from its final three round-based maps, forcing them to make a whimper instead of a bang regardless of quality.
Really, all Treyarch can do is put out the best possible content it can and hope that players forgive Paradox Junction instead of holding a grudge like they did with The Tomb. On the bright side, Treyarch is acting fast to make up for the unpopular release, as Season 3 is bringing more than just a 935-controlled Norwegion fishing town to players. In addition to the big midseason release, the following content is coming:
- Zombie Battle, which is essentially a free-for-all version of Grief supporting four players. Success will reward Whimsical Gobblegums, and it is available on all three full-sized maps.
- Ashwood Survival, which has the unique gimmick of the ground level of Pack-a-Punch being treated like the fog on Ashes of the Damned. A Cursed mode version will also be available.
- Directed mode and Starting Room mode for Paradox Junction.
- A new Support streak called Ion Core, which pierces walls and deals radiation damage.
- The iconic 1911 pistol will be unlockable in BO7 Season 3, which has a special place in Zombies fans’ hearts.
- The first legacy weapon arrives midseason, which will be as strong as a Wonder Weapon and has a very rare chance of dropping from the Mystery Box.
All this content, in addition to a promising round-based map in Season 3 Reloaded, will hopefully be enough to help BO7 Zombies get over the hump that was Paradox Junction. The game has made strides in improving the aspects players have been critical of for years now — the storytelling, the map designs, the lack of old-school mechanics, and soon, the quality of the Mystery Box. Yes, Paradox Junction was a misfire, but it really wouldn’t be fair for it to kill interest in the latest CoD Zombies mode when it still has half its life ahead of it. It’s hard not to worry, though. The hate feels equally justified and overblown, much like with The Tomb, and though Treyarch surely got the message, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. There’s a very real scenario where Totenreich is a masterpiece, but doesn’t get the love it deserves because so many have checked out following Paradox Junction. For now, all CoD Zombies fans can do is hope for the best, as the current feeling of deja vu is hard to ignore.
