Xbox’s Matt Booty has revealed that Blizzard is assisting with the development of the cinematics in the upcoming Fable reboot. While the majority of Fable‘s development is still being handled by Playground Games, Blizzard is there to give a helping hand in an area where the studio is well-versed in producing top-quality work.

Excitement continues to build for the upcoming Fable reboot. It was announced back in 2020 and is the first new game in the franchise since Fable: The Journey in 2012. The latest installment sees Forza Horizon developer Playground Games take the reins from the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, marking a brand-new and exciting chapter for the franchise. The developer started 2026 with a fresh Fable gameplay trailer, confirming its plans to launch the game later this year.

Fable Fans Are Worried That One Popular Series Feature Won’t Return in the Reboot

Fable fans share their concerns about one popular series feature potentially not returning in the reboot.

Blizzard is Helping With Fable’s Cinematics

Speaking on the Official Xbox Podcast, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty revealed that Blizzard is currently assisting in creating the cinematics for Fable. The reveal came when Booty spoke about how developers under the Xbox banner can help one another in their respective specialties. “We’ve got the Blizzard cinematics team helping out on Fable. We’ve got our studio in Montreal, Compulsion Games, using the Activision MoCap studio. We’ve got the team at Rare with a lot of multiplayer experience working on Sea of Thieves, helping out Double Fine on Kiln, the pottery game.”

Taken in isolation, Blizzard working on Fable might seem like a strange crossover. The studio has plenty of its own projects at the moment, including the ongoing development of Diablo 4, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft. However, the incredible Blizzard cinematics over the years make the studio a prime candidate if Playground Games needs a little assistance in the final stretch of Fable‘s development. It’s an area where Blizzard has excelled in recent years, whereas Playground Games lacks experience creating cinematic RPGs. The success of the Fable reboot is important to Microsoft, so it makes sense that it would turn to one of its biggest studios to help get the project over the line.

Although Fable does not have an official release date yet, gamers are slowly getting a better idea of what they can expect from the upcoming RPG. The reboot is expected to be fairly faithful to the past games in the series, although there have already been some controversial changes. Notably, it seems that Fable is ditching co-op, a series staple, as well as the iconic morphing system, which transformed player characters’ appearances based on their choices.

Rumors recently surfaced that Fable‘s release date could slip to 2027 amid competition from Grand Theft Auto 6. However, developer Playground Games has pushed back against Fable‘s delay rumors, seemingly confirming that the reboot is still planned for an Autumn 2026 release. Given the already lengthy wait for a new game in the series, fans will be hoping the studio keeps its word and remains on track to launch this year.
