Since the beginning of the franchise, the Borderlands games have introduced a huge roster of fun and exciting characters. The likes of Lilith and Tiny Tina have had plenty of time in the spotlight, but it’s time for the series to finally give one underrated Borderlands character a shot at his own story in the next entry.

There are some big hopes for Borderlands 4 to do right by some characters, but one in particular has loads of potential that has yet to be achieved. One character who has been with the franchise since the very first game is Marcus Kincaid. As a weapons salesman with a mercenary outlook on life, Marcus is a perfect character to get his own in-depth story through either DLC or as a main player in the story of Borderlands 4.

Borderlands 3 Players Have Had a Major Impact on Scientific Research

A recent study underscores a groundbreaking achievement, showing how millions of Borderlands 3 players have had a major impact on scientific research.

Marcus Has Been in Borderlands Since the Beginning

At the beginning of the first Borderlands, Marcus is the bus driver who brings the original four Vault Hunters to Fyrestone. From there, Marcus is a regular fixture in the games as the go-to weapons and ammo salesman. In the world of Borderlands, Marcus is a passionate purveyor of deadly weapons, but is also quite ruthless with his business tactics, which provides ample material for Borderlands 4 to dive into.

A Mercenary Mindset Focused on Profits

When it comes to business, Marcus does not have a moral bone in his body. Profit is king, and Marcus will do anything in his power to ensure that he remains on top of the market. Borderlands is a violent world filled with people who will do anything to get ahead, and Marcus is basically the poster model for this philosophy. As an arms dealer devoid of any solid moral compass, Marcus is truly a fascinating character, and he deserves to play a bigger part in the franchise.

In order to keep competition at bay, Marcus will even resort to killing rival merchants who dare challenge his business model. Weapons play a huge role in Borderlands, and Marcus has been a constant and consistent name that players are faced with in order to get the supplies they need. However, he has mostly been kept at the surface level. For a character who has been around since the franchise’s genesis, it seems strange that he hasn’t gotten more attention by now.

Spoilers ahead for
Borderlands 2

Marcus Feels Like a Missed Opportunity

Despite the immense greed and complete dismissal of morality, Marcus holds a soft spot for the Vault Hunters. Of course, it could be because they tend to be important members of his clientele, but there are hints of Marcus having a softer heart than one might originally think. When Roland dies in Borderlands 2, Marcus is visibly saddened by the situation. This adds a whole new layer to the character. Such a stark contrast in this character feels like the franchise is passing up a great chance to highlight the nuances of Marcus.

This year finally gave confirmation that Borderlands 4 is in active development, and it will be fascinating to see where the series goes from where Borderlands 3 left off. With the Borderlands movie set to release later this year and a new game on the horizon, there’s no telling where the series will go, but Marcus could be an unexpected character to bring Borderlands 4 an awesome story arc.
