Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Who is she playing? No one is quite sure. People are speculating that she is Jean Grey, the telepathic mutant previously played by Sophie Turner and Famke Janssen in Fox’s X-Men movies. But Marvel is being tightlipped about Sink’s role, and yet, for some reason, they’re still sending her out on the movie’s press tour ahead of its premiere next week. I don’t know what kind of restrictions interviewers are being given when speaking to her and the cast, but somehow she hasn’t been bombarded with questions about whether or not she is playing Jean. One interviewer found a way to name-drop the hero, however, and Sink managed to avoid giving anything away.

The Backstage Experience’s Dave Morales interviewed Sink for Brand New Day, and most of the questions were about Marvel’s demands for secrecy around the role she’s playing. But he also found a roundabout way of gesturing at the rumors around who she’s playing, potentially giving Sink just enough to bait her into maybe revealing something, but she swerves around the trap he’s set up.

“Let’s pretend here if I walked into a store and bought some jeans, grey, for instance,” Morales says.

A brief moment of silence.

“And what about them?” Sink replies.

The interviewer laughs, says that is a “great answer,” and moves on, but I’m surprised Sink’s PR handler didn’t come in and smite him for even gesturing at Jean. Sink’s only got a few more days of this Marvel gag order before she can talk about her work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as the movie is coming to theaters on July 31. It’s the last MCU movie before Avengers: Doomsday premieres in December, and thus far, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is not confirmed to appear in the big crossover movie, so hopefully we get a sense of what he’s going to be doing while everyone else is getting their ass beat by Doctor Doom before the credits roll.
