Nearly thirteen years after its release, the PlayStation 4 is about to receive a brand-new game, a sequel to Dead of Darkness. The first game launched on PlayStation 4 in July 2025, and at the time of writing, it has an average user score of 4.72 out of 5 from more than 230 reviews.

Like its predecessor, Dead of Darkness 2 will be an isometric survival horror game with old-school visuals. However, it will feature fresh protagonists and a new setting. While the first game takes place on a strange island in England, the second installment moves the story to Pennsylvania, USA.

Dead of Darkness 2 Is Coming to the PS4

Developer Retrofiction Games has confirmed that Dead of Darkness 2 will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Alongside enhanced visuals, the sequel will introduce several new gameplay mechanics. The most noticeable change from the first game is the addition of seamless character swapping. According to the developer, players will be able to switch between different characters and continue the game from their perspectives. New to the sequel is also 90s anime-inspired animations that will apparently act as cutscenes.

The first Dead of Darkness game was widely praised for its gameplay, which resembled the classic Resident Evil games. Based on the sequel’s first trailer, the developer seems to have retained those elements. Players can catch a glimpse of the same RE-style inventory management mechanics in the trailer, albeit with an overhauled UI/UX. The trailer also briefly showcases several new weapons, including a Thompson SMG.

One of the shortcomings of the first game, according to some players, was its lackluster story. The second game appears poised to address that by expanding the character roster and offering a more emotional premise. Dead of Darkness 2 will feature 28 characters compared to the first game’s cast of only about 15. While more characters won’t necessarily guarantee a gripping story, it could be a step in the right direction and add more narrative complexity to an otherwise minimalist survival horror game.

The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 won’t be Dead of Darkness 2‘s only targeted platforms. In fact, the game will be available on most modern consoles and PC, including Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. As of this writing, Dead of Darkness 2 doesn’t have an exact release date. And given that Retrofiction Games is indeed a solo developer, the launch might not be that close. That said, the PS Store page for the sequel is live, so fans of retro-style horror games can wishlist it to get notified about the launches.
