A new co-op zombie game called NightRunner has been unveiled, and it is set to enter playtest on Steam as soon as October 3, 2026. NightRunner wants to blend several genres, including extraction shooter, horde shooter, and survival, into one seamless experience. And the result looks like an intriguing mix, especially for Steam users who like PvE shooters.

Indie studio 314 Arts developed NightRunner as a self-proclaimed evolution of horde shooter games, drawing inspiration from Killing Floor, Escape from Tarkov, and Call of Duty Zombies‘s TranZit map. These games also shape NightRunner‘s gameplay loop, which centers on a moving train that alien creatures constantly ambush. Between attacks, players can stop at several stations to explore and search for worthwhile loot to extract.

NightRunner Features

  • DEFEND a moving train and protect its wagons from destruction
  • EXPLORE nearby areas at each train station
  • COLLECT valuable loot
  • EXTRACT with the loot to keep it
  • TEAM UP with up to three other friends to protect the train together
  • UPGRADE the team’s weapons and gear to take on harder challenges

NightRunner Gameplay Officially Unveiled

The first gameplay trailer for NightRunner shows a group of players protecting different train wagons from invasive creatures while searching nearby towns for supplies. The developer says NightRunner will be a PvE-only shooter, with no PvP game modes. The game will also feature an Endless Mode inspired by Call of Duty Zombies modes, where players fight waves of enemies until they die, and a Dungeons mode with a linear structure and boss encounters.

In NightRunner, players join an organization that takes on dangerous missions to deliver cargo across a post-apocalyptic world. These deadly missions require players to adapt to different threats, which ties directly into NightRunner‘s hybrid gameplay. The game also features different builds, or Runner Kits, that can change the gameplay, as well as class-based skills such as Engineer, Stalker, Field Expert, and Thermite, that add variety to it.

NightRunner Has a Unique Zone-Shrink Mechanic

At the start of the game, each NightRunner player takes charge of protecting and maintaining a specific train wagon. Each wagon has different reinforcements and abilities that can give players an edge in combat. But when enemies destroy or detach one of the wagons, players must retreat to the remaining ones and try to stand their ground as the zone gets tighter. In other words, NightRunner‘s gameplay could grow more intense as the game progresses, thanks to a zone-shrinking mechanic often seen in battle royale games like CoD Warzone.

NightRunner Playtest Is Right Around the Corner

NightRunner is currently accepting player requests for its scheduled playtest. According to the developer, players can submit their requests through the Steam page until October 4, one day after the game officially starts the test. The game has no set release date at the time of writing, but the developer’s official website says NightRunner should release sometime in 2027. It remains to be seen whether players will enjoy the upcoming playtest and whether the game can appeal to a wider audience at launch, especially now that the extraction shooter genre looks crowded on Steam.
