Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is a favorite among fans of the franchise with players still discussing the game’s campaign twelve years after its release. There are four different endings players can get depending on whether the characters Chloe and Menendez live. The canon ending for Black Ops 2 has both Chloe and Menendez survive the events of the game, resulting in an alliance between the US and China, ending the war.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Main Antagonist Could Be a Familiar Face

There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the story of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, especially with the game’s main antagonist.

In addition to the main ending, there is a secondary ending that changes depending on whether fan favorite character Alex Mason survives. If Mason lives, he visits Frank Woods in retirement, reuniting with Section. If Mason dies, Section and Woods visit Mason’s grave and Section announces his retirement from the military. Unlike the main ending, Mason’s fate has never been made canon, leaving fans to theorize whether the CIA agent survived. In an interview with GamesBeat, associate creative director at Treyarch Miles Leslie confirmed Mason’s fate. Unfortunately for Mason, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be operating under the assumption that Alex Mason died in the 80s portion of Black Ops 2.

Treyarch Has Unfortunate News For Fans of Alex Mason

While this most likely means little for the story of Black Ops 6, it may be disheartening to Black Ops fans. In the ending of Black Ops 2 where Mason lives, the character goes into hiding for 30 years, meaning the chances he would appear in Black Ops 6, which takes place in the 90s, were very unlikely. Despite this, Alex Mason was a fan favorite character, and fans can no longer hold onto the hope that he survived the events of Black Ops 2.

Despite Alex Mason being gone, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s campaign will connect directly to Black Ops 2. Returning characters like Frank Woods will appear in the new game’s campaign, giving longtime fans of the franchise something familiar to look forward to in its next entry. Black Ops 6 takes place very close to the flashbacks of Black Ops 2, with the trailer for the new game even featuring Woods in a wheelchair after his encounter with Menendez, the villain of Black Ops 2.

Since Black Ops 6 takes place between the two time periods of Black Ops 2, fans will be able to look forward to a gap in the Black Ops story finally being filled.
