Peter Berg, the director and co-writer of the upcoming Call of Duty live-action movie has officially confirmed that it’ll be set in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe. While no exact details of the movie’s plot have been confirmed just yet, this setting might mean that the Call of Duty movie will revolve around well-known characters like Captain Price, Ghost, Soap, and Makarov.
An official Call of Duty live-action movie has been in the works for over a decade now, with Activision announcing its intentions to release major blockbuster adaptations as early as 2015. In 2017, Activision doubled down on its intentions, with Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk stating that multiple Call of Duty live-action projects were in the works and that the production team had “plotted out many years.” News of any live-action Call of Duty project then went silent, only to resurface in September 2025 when Activision confirmed it was working with Paramount to finally create a movie based on the game series.
Call of Duty Live-Action Movie Is Set in the Modern Warfare Timeline
Now, 10 months after its official re-announcement, the Call of Duty live-action movie has finally been given a setting. During Fanatics Fest in New York City (and first reported on by THR), Peter Berg confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty movie will be set in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe. That’s currently the only piece of official information fans have to go on. It’s unclear if the Call of Duty movie will be a direct adaptation of one of the Modern Warfare games, or if it will simply tie into the universe by including nods and references to the source material, such as by including characters like Captain Price or Ghost.

Peter Berg was officially announced as the Call of Duty movie’s director back in October 2025. An actor-turned-director, Peter Berg has been directing and writing both movies and TV shows since the 1990s. Some of Berg’s most notable works are Friday Night Lights, Hancock, Battleship, Lone Survivor, and Deepwater Horizon. On top of working on this Call of Duty movie, Berg has a new feature film dropping later this year on Netflix titled The Mosquito Bowl.
Announced alongside Peter Berg, Taylor Sheridan will be co-writing and producing the Call of Duty movie. Sheridan is likely best known for his work on the Yellowstone series and all of its various prequels, which he created, executive produced, wrote for, and directed. Sheridan has also written for a number of well-known movies, with some of the most notable being Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River.

Back in April, during CinemaCon 2026’s Paramount panel, the Call of Duty movie received an official release date of June 30, 2028, coinciding with the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Though no story details were given during this panel, Peter Berg did state that his goal is to show the role of a soldier “on a human level, but also bring amazing scale.”
