Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actor Charlie Cox has revealed he wants to see Robert Pattinson take over the physical role of Gustave in the upcoming movie adaptation. While Cox is happy to give up some elements of Gustave for the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 movie, he insists that he would still want to be the voice of the character to get the best of both worlds.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was arguably the biggest surprise of 2025. Coming into the year, Sandfall Interactive’s RPG had little fanfare, but was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its April 2025 launch. This rapidly translated into huge sales figures for the developer’s debut title. Later in the year, awards recognition followed. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025, beating other notable titles including Hollow Knight: Silksong, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. It is undoubtedly one of the most critically lauded titles of recent years, and it’s unsurprising that it is set to receive a film adaptation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Actor Almost Missed Audition for Her Starring Role

One of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s lead actresses shares how she almost missed the chance to be part of the award-winning game.

Charlie Cox Wants Robert Pattinson to Play Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Movie

Speaking to GamesRadar+ at the recent BAFTA Games Awards, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 star Charlie Cox gave his thoughts on who should play his character, Gustave. “My involvement with this, as minuscule as it was originally and how it’s now expanded so much, has been nothing but an incredibly humbling and enjoyable experience,” he said. “I was thinking that they should probably – if they make the movie – they should get Robert Pattinson to play the part, and I should do the voice. Because then they would have pretty much the exact Gustave from the game… I just think Gustave looks like Rob.”

Cox has previously spoken about his work on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, noting that he feels like a “total fraud” given the widespread praise for what, to him, amounted to around four hours of work in the recording booth. He has also praised Gustave’s motion capture actor, Maxence Cazorla, crediting much of the performance to his work. Cox’s humility about the role is admirable, but it’s also great that he feels enough ownership over Gustave that he’d still love to return to voice him in the movie adaptation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s movie adaptation was confirmed in January 2025, months before the game’s release. At that point, very little was known about the game’s story and characters, and even less about the positive reception it would later receive. Expectations for the film certainly feel higher now than when it was initially announced. The movie is being made by Sandfall Interactive and Story Kitchen, but there hasn’t been much official news on that front for a while.
