Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest, a brand-new turn-based action-adventure game inspired by the beloved book series, has just made its way to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In the wake of its launch, official reviews for Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest have started to roll in, but they’re looking a little mixed.

Written by multiple authors under the pen name Erin Hunter, the Warrior Cats book series made its debut in 2003. Over the last 23 years, a total of nine Warrior Cats arcs have been released, each one revolving around new heroes that come from each of the universe’s distinct nature-based Clans. While the ongoing book series has continued to be the most widely popular aspect of the franchise, Warrior Cats has branched out into several other mediums, including the world of video games. In 2021, an official Warrior Cats game was made available in Roblox, and now, fans have access to a full-fledged, standalone Warrior Cats turn-based RPG.

Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest Has Been Met With a Mixed Reception

Generally speaking, Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest hasn’t been met with the strongest critical reception. Of the four official outlet reviews available at the time of writing, COGconnected has given Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest the highest score, giving the newly released adaptation a 77/100. COGconnected heavily praises Warrior Cats‘ art design, character customization features, and the game’s family-friendly nature, but does point out key issues with the game’s story and its underdeveloped mechanics and core structure.

ScreenRant gave Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest a 7/10 in its recent review. Unlike COGconnected, ScreenRant found that the game’s art style and graphics felt a little outdated, but praised the adaptation’s turn-based gameplay. In a further breakdown of its overall score, ScreenRant gives Warrior Cats‘ story a 7/10, its gameplay an 8/10, its visuals a 5/10, and its audio a 7/10. In its final verdict, ScreenRant said that Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest “isn’t revolutionary, but it’s a solid turn-based RPG that should please fans of the book series.”

Review scores for Warrior Cats then take a bit of a dive. Gaming Trend has given Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest a 45/100, marking it ‘Below Average’, praising the game’s stance-based combat and customization options, but criticizing its “ugly graphics,” “copy-paste campaigns,” and a “boring overworld” with “extraneous features [that] fail to entertain.” Nintendo Everything is currently the outlet with the lowest score for Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest, giving the game 2/5 stars and calling it a “a game that tries to appeal to the broadest possible audience, but it fails to establish any kind of meaningful identity for itself as a result.”

Given that there are only a handful of official reviews currently available for Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest, neither OpenCritic nor Metacritic have their usual stats available. Over on Steam, however, this seemingly mixed reception is spelled out clearly, with the game sitting at a ‘Mixed’ rating after a total of 846 user reviews.
