ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut is making a big return after 28 years, with a brand-new physical release for the Nintendo 64. This long-forgotten N64 title has been extremely difficult to come by, but now it should be much easier for fans to get their hands on thanks to this new release.

ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut was originally released in 1998 as an updated version of ClayFighter 63 1/3, with a big catch: it was only available as a US rental exclusive from Blockbuster Video. This made it among the rarest and most expensive N64 games ever, because even those who had a copy of the game back in 1998 never necessarily got to keep it.

ModRetro has officially released a brand-new version of ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut for Nintendo 64, making this classic 90s title more accessible than ever. It marks the first time the game has ever been available as a retail release, priced at $49.99. Given that sealed copies previously sold for thousands, it’s fair to say this will be a much preferred option for many gamers. The game is compatible with original NTSC Nintendo 64 consoles and the M64, ModRetro’s own version of the N64.

Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.

The game is a fighting game where players control a clay warrior, with all the sprites and animations based on real clay figures. This gives ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut a unique aesthetic unlike anything else from that era. Visuals aside, it’s also a solid fighting game, with 16 clay fighters to choose from. It’s definitely more of a parody of games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat than a direct competitor. ModRetro recommends playing ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut in multiplayer, suggesting gamers should “grab a second M64 Pro Controller and settle it the way it was meant to be settled.”

ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut Key Features

  • Clay stop-motion animated characters
  • 16 fighters to choose from, including Earthworm Jim
  • Co-op support
  • Compatible with Nintendo 64 and M64
  • Compatible with Rumble Pak

It will be interesting to see how this new release will impact the price of original copies of ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut. Making it more accessible could drive the price down, but it’s also possible collectors weren’t buying the original to play, just to own. That would suggest original copies may retain some of their value.

ModRetro has been extremely important in keeping the love for physical retro releases alive and well. The company has two physical consoles, the M64 and the Chromatic, which are intended as modern versions of the Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy Color. It’s not only releasing classic games for both platforms, but also new ones from retro game developers. It’s cool to see that enough gamers still care about retro gaming for it to remain a financially viable option for ModRetro and other game developers.
