Clockwork Revolution is an Xbox console exclusive, with Microsoft confirming as much during its latest showcase. The move is significant for signaling yet another shift in platform strategy at Xbox, although the company’s frequent reversals have prompted some fans to question whether Clockwork Revolution will truly skip PlayStation.
The latest title from RPG veterans at inXile Entertainment, Clockwork Revolution was originally announced at the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase. Although it was never officially announced for the PlayStation 5, it was widely expected to reach Sony’s console after Microsoft’s pivot to multiplatform publishing, which began in early 2024 and continued over the next two years.

As is usually the case with Microsoft’s showcases, Xbox Game Pass now subscribers have a whole new suite of games to look forward to.
Clockwork Revolution Gets Xbox Console Exclusivity Confirmation
The June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase offered another look at Clockwork Revolution, with Microsoft also reconfirming its status as an exclusive. “We want people to choose Xbox because of great games and experiences,” CEO Asha Sharma said in a prepared statement. “That also means giving you something that was made for Xbox.” Microsoft subsequently clarified that Sharma was not referring to timed exclusivity, saying console players will only be able to play Clockwork Revolution on the Xbox Series X and Series S. Gears of War: E-Day received an identical Xbox exclusivity pledge during the same event.
Some Fans Aren’t Buying the Latest Xbox Exclusivity Pivot
Online reactions to the announcement appear mixed. Some fans welcomed the move, echoing Sharma’s remarks about exclusives making the Xbox Series X/S more appealing. Others said that their enjoyment of any given title is not affected by whether more people get to play it. Skeptics questioned whether the shift would last, given how soon it followed Microsoft’s previous pivot. “Trusting Xbox to stick to their guns is one of the worst bets you can possibly make in this industry,” reads one highly upvoted Reddit comment responding to the news.
Microsoft’s latest reversal of platform policy is largely tied to its new leadership, as Sharma signaled Xbox would be rethinking its approach to exclusives shortly after taking over from Phil Spencer in February 2026. In some ways, Clockwork Revolution communicates the company’s renewed emphasis on console exclusivity more confidently than Gears of War: E-Day. While Gears remains one of Xbox’s most recognizable franchises, its identity is well established, giving it broad name recognition but also making its commercial ceiling easier to anticipate. Clockwork Revolution, by contrast, is a big-budget new IP from a respected studio that has not launched an original property in years. If Microsoft is serious about reasserting the value of Xbox console exclusives, reserving ambitious new original IP for its own ecosystem would be one of the clearest ways to make that strategy apparent even to consumers who have no interest in Gears.

Even if Clockwork Revolution never reaches rival consoles, it is still set to launch day one on PC, as originally announced. True Xbox exclusives have effectively been a thing of the past since the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative began in 2016. The game’s latest trailer reaffirmed its 2027 launch window but did not provide a more specific time frame. Historical precedent suggests the Clockwork Revolution release date will be announced during the January Xbox Developer Direct if the game is planned for the first half of 2027, or at next year’s June Xbox Games Showcase if it is targeting the second half.
