Cyberpunk 2077 has officially climbed above Gears of War: E-Day on Steam’s global Top Sellers chart. The result puts the nearly six-year-old RPG ahead of one of Xbox’s biggest first-party releases during its launch window, serving as yet another reminder of the remarkably long tail that Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved.

CDPR originally released Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020, while Gears of War: E-Day is only now reaching players. Premium Edition owners have had early access since October 1, with the full worldwide launch scheduled for October 6 on the Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077 Tracking Ahead of Gears of War: E-Day on Steam

Cyberpunkj 20'77 vs Gears of War E Day Steam Global Top Sellers Chart October 4 2026 snapshot

As of October 4, Steam’s official global Top Sellers chart has Cyberpunk 2077 at number three overall and Gears of War: E-Day at number eight. The chart measures revenue rather than copies sold, making the comparison more interesting because Cyberpunk 2077 is currently 70% off at $17.99, compared to E-Day‘s $69.99 standard price. That notwithstanding, the ranking cannot be treated as evidence that CDPR’s dystopian RPG is selling more copies overall outside of Steam. The comparison gets more complicated considering Gears of War: E-Day is also part of the October 2026 Xbox Game Pass lineup, which is bound to have cannibalized its PC sales to some degree.

While the current discount helps explain why Cyberpunk 2077 is surging on Steam as of early October 2026, understanding the game’s broader staying power is a whole other thing. CDPR confirmed in July 2026 that the RPG has passed 40 million copies sold, extending a sales run that has continued at a remarkably steady pace long after launch. When Cyberpunk 2077 crossed 30 million sales in November 2024, it had already added another 5 million copies over the previous year. That momentum not only continued over the next 20 months, but accelerated.

As is the case with The Witcher 3, another CDPR game to achieve an immensely long sales tail, Cyberpunk 2077 longevity has not happened passively. The developer was already discussing efforts to support the game long-term in 2022, and later said the popularity of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the reception to September 2022 update 1.6 had a “measurable impact” on sales as the game passed 20 million copies. Update 2.0 and Cyberpunk 2077‘s critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion provided another major revival in 2023, while subsequent support has included additional content drops and releases on the Nintendo Switch 2 and modern Macs with Apple’s M-series chips.

The ongoing Steam Autumn Sale 2026 is another example of that life cycle continuing to produce results. Cyberpunk 2077 is discounted to $17.99 through October 8, with its latest deal directly overlapping with E-Day‘s October 6 worldwide launch. Its position above the new Xbox release does not prove that Gears of War: E-Day is struggling, but it does offer another clear demonstration of just how much commercial momentum CDPR has managed to preserve in a game released all the way back in 2020.
