Almost six years after its initial release, Cyberpunk 2077 has reached its highest concurrent Steam player count since the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC. The new milestone further reiterates Cyberpunk 2077‘s incredible turnaround over the years, as the game continues to thrive long after its launch.

After its disastrous release back in 2020, it’s almost unfathomable that Cyberpunk 2077 is held in such high regard now. There was always an excellent game underneath what was an unfinished product upon launch, and CD Projekt RED has worked hard to ensure the game is the very best it can be in the time since. The game has changed and evolved, and is now pretty much unrecognizable from the title that launched almost six years ago.

Cyberpunk 2077 Hits Highest Steam Player Count Since Phantom Liberty Release

Following the surprise release of Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, players have flocked back to CD Projekt RED’s sci-fi RPG in massive numbers. The game recently hit a concurrent player peak on Steam of 187,215, the highest since 274,526 concurrent players jumped in after the Phantom Liberty DLC launched in 2023. It’s still a far cry from the all-time peak of 1,054,388 it achieved on launch almost six years ago, but for a game of its age, these are some incredible numbers.

Update 2.5 was released to mark the launch of Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 on Netflix, with much of the content in the update based around the popular anime. Many gamers assumed CD Projekt RED was done with the game, especially given that The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 are both in development at the studio at the moment. Still, it’s cool to see that support is ongoing, and it raises the question of whether there’s even more to come in the future, too.

CD Projekt RED’s support is just one reason players keep returning to Cyberpunk 2077. But there are other reasons, too – take mods, for example. It has one of the most dedicated modding communities in gaming, with talented creators continuing to innovate and add new features to the game. Recently, a mod was released that added co-op to Cyberpunk 2077, letting players explore Night City with friends for the first time. With mods like this coming out, it’s no surprise the game retains such an active player base.

It will likely be a long time yet before Cyberpunk 2 is released. While CD Projekt RED has been forthcoming about the fact that the game is in development, it has also made no secret of the fact that The Witcher 4 is its main priority at the moment. As per the developer’s most recent update, development on Cyberpunk 2 is slowly ramping up, but fans are unlikely to actually see anything from the game for a while.
