The daughter of a terminally ill man is asking Rockstar Games to let her father play Grand Theft Auto 6, with the man only expected to have weeks to live. The launch of GTA 6 is set to be one of the biggest gaming events of 2026.
Rockstar Games has given fans plenty of reasons to be excited about the long-awaited launch of GTA 6. The franchise’s return to Vice City is set to be one of its most expansive in-game worlds ever, stretching beyond the Miami-based city and giving players free rein to travel the entire state of Leonida. The game will include plenty for players to do within its world as well, with everything from dirt biking and scuba diving to basketball and backyard wrestling included in GTA 6‘s massive world. Now, however, Rockstar is being asked to allow one fan to play the game ahead of its release, due to a serious medical condition.
Daughter Asks for Dying Father to Play GTA 6 Early
Reddit user lexakommurry made her heartfelt request on the Rockstar Games subreddit, hoping to reach a Rockstar employee. The post revealed that her father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and given only weeks to live, sending him home under hospice care. She shared that her father had spent thousands of hours playing recent entries in the Grand Theft Auto series and hoped that Rockstar could give him a chance to play the game before he dies, even revealing her father had bought a PS5 just to play GTA 6. One of the subreddit’s moderators has since removed the post, and Rockstar has not issued an official response.

While the Reddit post was removed, sympathetic fans in the comments offered help for the man’s daughter. Many suggested that she should share her father’s story on other platforms beyond just the Reddit post, including advising her to reach out to Grand Theft Auto content creators. Multiple fans directed her to Rockstar’s PR email address and linked the contact page through the company’s official website, potentially being able to speak directly to a Rockstar employee. One user did point out that, even if Rockstar agrees to allow the girl’s father to play the game, it likely would not be made public by the company.
The daughter’s request for her father may not be the first time Rockstar has granted such a unique opportunity. Ubisoft employee Anthony Armstrong had previously reached out to Rockstar Games in January about a terminally ill family member of their own, asking the company to allow them to play GTA 6 early while signing an NDA. Armstrong later shared that they had received “great news” from Rockstar, likely suggesting that their request had been granted and the family member was able to experience the games months before anyone else.
GTA 6 is primed to be one of Rockstar’s biggest success stories ever, even two months ahead of its launch. Take-Two shared in early August that the game was already performing well with its pre-orders, suggesting that sales of GTA 6 had been “exceptional” since pre-orders went live on June 25. Fans have been so excited about the next GTA game that Netflix briefly went down following the highly-anticipated premiere of the Extended Look trailer, which debuted as a timed exclusive on the streaming platform. Grand Theft Auto 6‘s launch will be monumental for both Rockstar and the gaming industry as a whole.
