A number of remarkable upcoming changes to Destiny 2 were recently shared in the latest TWID post, including the confirmed reversal of the weapon sunsetting mechanic which has made countless weapons from the game’s earliest years functionally obsolete. This change is a monumental one for Destiny 2‘s weapon sandbox overall, and while many fans of the game were certain a change like this would never come, it seems as though the countless weapons from the game’s first few years will actually be getting the chance to shine again.

Players who have hopped into the world of Destiny 2 over the last couple of years may not be too familiar with the concept of sunsetting, but essentially, the mechanic was applied to practically all non-exotic weapons from the game’s first few years, and meant that players were unable to infuse them past the base power level. The intention behind this mechanic was to encourage players to constantly use new weapons rather than rely purely on old favorites, but whatever the case, it’s safe to say the idea of sunsetting very quickly fell flat. Massive community backlash eventually resulted in Bungie doing away with continued weapon sunsetting, though weapons that had already been sunset remained virtually unusable in most content.

Players should reconsider using one of the most overlooked Exotic weapons in Destiny 2 since it can be surprisingly powerful when properly used.

With the insights shared in the most recent This Week In Destiny post, however, it seems this won’t be the case for too much longer. Bungie has confirmed its decision to completely remove the power limits on all legacy items, effectively un-sunsetting them. The developers of Destiny 2 explained in this weekly blog post that this decision was made as part of their efforts to streamline power levels in The Final Shape, stating that Destiny 2‘s power level mechanics as they are now are “fundamentally incompatible” with the Fireteam Power feature that the team is working on for the upcoming DLC, which will make it easier than ever before for fans to play with their friends – whether they’re veteran Guardians, or fresh out of the grave.

How Destiny 2’s U-Turn on Sunsetting is Too Little Too Late For Some Players

Now, there is a rather unfortunate side to this move. Sadly, an extremely large portion of veteran Destiny 2 players have dismantled their old legacy weapons by this point, either to conserve valuable vault space or simply because most believed there would never come a day that such weapons would be useful again. This doesn’t mean the decision to reverse sunsetting is moot, though. While Bungie has expressed regret over there being no recovery options for these lost weapons, the developers have confirmed that they intend to introduce sources for most or all such legacy weapons, complete with tweaks to make them better fit into the current sandbox.

The various weapons introduced with Destiny 2‘s Into the Light update are a big step forward when it comes to reintroducing old favorites, though. It’s not yet clear how Bungie might go about reintroducing sunset weapons, though players who have held onto their god-roll legacy weapons certainly have cause for celebration.
