Destiny 2 Fans Declare Victory After Months Of Crashing Out: ‘It Worked’

The plan was to sunset Destiny 2 in June. Mass layoffs followed a couple of weeks later, including most of the team working on Bungie’s sci-fi MMO. Fans were understandably upset. They signed petitions, threatened boycotts, and spammed the chat in every summer gaming showcase with demands for Sony to greenlight Destiny 3. Sony has not done that, at least not yet, but Bungie has done a 180 on not bringing new content to Destiny 2 and fans are celebrating like it’s the end of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

The content coming to Destiny 2 isn’t technically new. It’s actually stuff that was removed from the game and vaulted years ago. But it will have to be remade to bring it in line with the current standards and gameplay mechanics of the rest of the loot shooter. And if you had told the fan base back in May that Destiny 2 would be undoing vaulting, the most controversial decision in the game’s nearly 10-year history, they would certainly have treated it as a major commitment to new content.

And it is. Bungie says it’s not ready to share a roadmap yet on when stuff might actually start going live, but the vibe the studio is giving off is that it won’t begin to start rolling out for at least several more months. But that hasn’t stopped most fans from declaring victory:

Some people certainly remain skeptical of Bungie’s ability to deliver, especially given the studio has just laid off so many of the people who would have been the obvious picks to lead this new initiative. There have already been questions about whether anyone who was cut will be brought back as a result of this announcement. And if they aren’t, how exactly will Bungie deliver on such an ambitious promise?

Others have gone overboard with the positivity, going so far as to try to manifest a new Destiny game. Bungie confirmed in today’s announcement that it will be working on “new stories” in the Destiny universe, but gave no further details on what shape those plans may take. That didn’t stop some people from turning to the studio’s outdated LinkedIn page to claim Destiny 3 is definitely happening.

Old language reading “Bungie is focused on developing the next highly-anticipated release in the Destiny universe” in the company’s about section on LinkedIn was confirmed to be a nothingburger by the studio’s community manager. “Confirmed: Old bio,” he wrote. “Don’t read too much into it. Same for the facebook one we needed to update! Focus on the video & blog from Poria & Josh for today. More Marathon/Destiny news will come in the future via official announcements and comms beats.”

For now, Destiny 2 fans have been given the green light to embrace their most unhinged fantasies for the future of the franchise. Will any of it be feasible? Will any of it make enough money to pave a path to sustainability for Bungie? Who can say. That’s tomorrow’s problem.
