A Destiny 2 player has amused the community by pointing out a surprising aspect of the design of Cabal Empress Caiatl. The unusual optical illusion adds a new, hilarious dimension to the normally stoic and serious Destiny 2 character.

First introduced in 2021 as the central antagonist of the Season of the Chosen, Caiatl has proven to be one of humanity’s strongest allies and one of the most memorable Destiny 2 characters. In the game’s storyline, Caiatl is Empress of the Cabal, the massive empire of warlike aliens that serves as one of the main hostile factions in the Destiny universe. Originally aiming to suborn Earth and the Guardians into her war against the Hive, Caiatl was later convinced to forge an alliance with humanity, turning her forces against the true enemy: The Witness.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape Review

Destiny 2’s finale doesn’t pull punches when it comes to providing an exciting story enriched with emotional complexion.

Thanks to an observation by Destiny 2 player Ekiaz, Caiatl is now the source for an unusual reference to none other than the infamous Furby toys. Ekiaz uploaded a screenshot taken from their playthrough of Destiny 2The Final Shape to the Destiny 2 subreddit, shocking and amusing the community.

Unusual Furby Sighting Amuses Destiny 2 Players

The photo posted by Ekiaz showed a closeup of Caiatl’s armored chestplate. As the Empress of the Cabal, Caiatl doesn’t dress in the manner of a typical Cabal soldier or officer found in Destiny 2. Instead, her outfit proudly displays her eyes and tusks, and features a large amount of ornamentation, including a sequence of four jeweled plates linked by a spherical medal. The arrangement of those plates and the medal hanging between them looked to Ekiaz like the wide-eyed stare of a Furby, the famous toy reviled by many for its “creepy” countenance.

Players reacted with feigned shock and horror, jokingly complaining that a game they’d committed years of their life to is now “completely unplayable.” Others railed at Ekiaz for their “cruel” discovery. A few suggested that the seemingly accidental Furby cameo in The Final Shape was anything but, and that it was a sign from Bungie hinting at the next steps for the Destiny fiction, now that the Guardians have vanquished The Witness forever. Some even thanked Ekiaz for verifying, saying they had noticed it themselves but weren’t sure.

That being said, it’s extremely likely that the face is an unintentional reference, and the product of pareidolia, the natural human tendency to perceive shapes and patterns in otherwise random or coincidental sights. Nevertheless, the unusual Furby sighting is a fun moment for the community to bond over, and with time, could become a popular in-joke for Destiny players.
