Renowned video game insider Jeff Grubb reported on his Giant Bomb podcast on YouTube that Disney is in talks with Bungie to make Star Wars Battlefront 3. Fans have been waiting for a new Star Wars game with shooter gameplay for quite some time, and many were left wondering if the rebooted Star Wars Battlefront would ever get a third game. First conceived and developed by Free Radical Design, Star Wars Battlefront 3 was later canceled by LucasArts in 2008, and a development build of the game leaked in 2016.
EA and DICE rebooted the Star Wars Battlefront franchise in 2015 and released a sequel as Star Wars Battlefront 2 just two years later. However, the game never got a sequel because of increasing budget costs to make a third title, as well as the major controversy surrounding Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s microtransactions. This was such a big issue that some government bodies and institutions across the world started campaigns to have loot boxes removed entirely from games. Though microtransactions were eventually removed, they ended up tainting the game’s name. Now, things may finally change with new Star Wars Battlefront 3 rumors.
Bungie or DICE to Develop Star Wars Battlefront 3
Talks about Star Wars Battlefront 3 made by DICE surfaced when fans praised Battlefield 6‘s graphics and gunplay, but never amounted to anything. Now, Disney is reported by Jeff Grubb to be in talks with both Bungie and DICE to make an official Star Wars Battlefront 3 after a long hiatus from the series. While DICE is an obvious candidate, Bungie is a standout pick because Destiny 2‘s gunplay has been praised within the industry by players and developers alike, and there is even a good precedent thanks to the game’s Renegades expansion. Grubb’s Giant Bomb podcast episode from today, October 19, talks about the new rumor and what it could mean for the franchise and both Bungie and DICE.

Bungie is busy with Marathon and reviving Destiny 2, but a high-profile game like Star Wars Battlefront 3 could be a good project for the studio to work on because it could reinstate the company in Sony’s good graces while also making a decent amount of money to then invest in Destiny 3. Then, it’s also worth mentioning that the gunplay and Star Wars vibes in Destiny 2‘s Renegades expansion were some of its most praised aspects. The expansion itself didn’t enjoy a lot of success for Destiny 2, but it shows the potential of a first-person Star Wars shooter made by Bungie.
Grubb believes this could be a good opportunity for Bungie to get back on its feet, but he also states it’s more likely for Star Wars Battlefront 3 to go to DICE instead. This remains to be seen, and Bungie’s past Star Wars work in Renegades may give it an edge. After all, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is among the games with the best launches and worst disasters to follow it up.
Still, the desire for a sequel is something fans haven’t given up. A fan made a Star Wars Battlefront 3 mod to have a sequel of sorts, and there was even a major petition for the game to be developed. Regardless of which developer the game goes to, fans now have tangible hope that a threequel will indeed be made.
