Disney Speedstorm fans have discovered that new artwork for Lightning McQueen depicts the character with the wrong number. The Disney kart racer developed by Gameloft boasts a wide variety of the media juggernaut’s most beloved characters from across many different films and series. Everyone from Disney princesses like Snow White and Cinderella to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is playable within Disney Speedstorm, with many of the included films also receiving their own track. Now, a Pixar racing series is one of the newest IPs to make its way to the Disney crossover.

The launch of Disney Speedstorm‘s Season 18 officially introduced the Cars franchise to the racing game. The Piston Cup season debuted three brand-new characters, with the addition of Lightning McQueen, Mater, and Cruz Ramirez to the playable roster. Radiator Springs was also brought to the game as a brand-new track, allowing players to race past some of the most iconic locations from Cars and its sequels. However, the debut of Lightning McQueen to Disney Speedstorm‘s playable cast brought some unexpected controversy.

A prominent Fortnite leaker reveals that a major gaming crossover with Disney could be coming to Epic Games’ popular battle royale.

Disney Speedstorm Makes Big Error on Lightning McQueen

The strange error was pointed out on the Steam subreddit by Reddit user rawmarius, showing off official art for Disney Speedstorm. The post points out several strange errors within the artwork, specifically aiming at where Lightning and Mater meet, suggesting that Gameloft may have used AI to fill in gaps. The mistakes came with one big error on the Piston Cup star’s number, showing the number 94 on his driver’s side door instead of Lightning McQueen’s usual 95. While the user later retracted their stance that the artwork was created entirely with AI, they still called into question the game’s position with Steam’s policy on disclosing AI art within games on the marketplace.

The obvious error pertaining to one of Disney’s most beloved characters was met with plenty of criticism and backlash from fans. Many expressed their disappointment in Disney Speedstorm for not catching such a blatant mistake. Many fans echoed the sentiment that the artwork was likely not created with AI, potentially caused by altering the image with editing software like Photoshop instead. One fan even shared that a corrected version of the artwork could be found when searching for the game on Google, though Steam’s version still shows the wrong number.

Lightning McQueen and friends were not the only characters added to Disney Speedstorm in recent months. January introduced two new characters from The Emperor’s New Groove, with Kuzco joining the roster on January 8 and Yzma on January 29. December also saw two new franchises added to the Disney crossover racing game, with Zootopia‘s Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and Flash alongside Carl and Russell from Up.

Disney Speedstorm‘s Piston Cup season also teased two brand-new characters coming with mid-season updates. Pixar’s upcoming Hoppers will receive a playable character in the game to celebrate the film’s release, with main character Mabel set to be added to the game in March. Disney Speedstorm will roll out a Big Hero 6-themed update in Season 18, with Go Go Tomago joining the playable cast, alongside the addition of a New Fransokyo-based track to the game. Disney Speedstorm‘s new Piston Cup season looks to be off to an exciting start for fans, even amidst some unexpected hiccups.
