Alongside the highly anticipated Dark Arisen expansion, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has also added a Hard Mode option with its 4.0 update that fixes one of the game’s biggest New Game Plus issues. Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been a bit of a diamond in the rough in the two years since its debut, and the team at Capcom behind the game and its expansion have put in an impressive amount of effort to bring the game up to players’ standards. One of the gameplay issues that plagued players was the fact that New Game Plus wasn’t exactly the most rewarding experience, but Hard Mode changes everything.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 gives players a lot of freedom to level up their Arisen, which is great. However, it also created a problem where New Game Plus left players with an overpowered character that was able to take on enemies far too easily. Many of the best New Game Plus modes over the years have increased the difficulty in some kind of capacity, but Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s version of this mode didn’t really incentivize replayability with a high-level character. Thankfully, fans who have been waiting for a greater challenge now have the 4.0 update’s Hard Mode to thank.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Hard Mode Finally Makes New Game Plus the Challenge It Should Have Been All Along
Capcom has offered several major fixes to Dragon’s Dogma 2 this year. From updates leading up to the expansion launch, getting rid of microtransactions, and the eventual Dark Arisen release, devs have clearly worked hard to right the wrongs that plagued the game at the start. Now that Hard Mode has been added into the mix, players with a powerful Arisen can finally dive back into the game’s world and actually have some struggle to look forward to.

Put the consoles in the correct order.
Leveling up in an RPG is deeply satisfying, but there is a difficult balance that needs to be achieved. Once a character becomes too powerful for the world they are fighting in, things can quickly turn boring. The stronger the character becomes, the harder the enemies should be, and Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s enemies in New Game Plus didn’t quite scratch that kind of challenge-focused itch.
Some of the biggest changes added to Dragon’s Dogma 2 in the Dark Arisen expansion include a new, ice-covered region called Norgan, a new campaign story attached to the region, and 12 Lost Rites dungeons that promise a deeper challenge.
Hard Mode Makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 Feel New Again
Making enemies more aggressive and more dynamic enemy placement brings a sense of freshness to a new playthrough, which is huge for the replayability value. A huge issue with Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s traversal and combat is that it grew competitive over time, but the 4.0 update shakes things up enough that players can finally feel a sense of surprise again, regardless of how many hours have been put into the game.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Hard Mode Still Might Not Be the Challenge That Some Fans Have Hoped For
The team behind the Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion have brought extra difficulty into the equation, but director Kento Kinoshita has even acknowledged that Hard Mode still might feel too easy for players who have managed to upgrade their Arisen to the highest possible level. A past interview Kinoshita did with 3DM Game offers some interesting insight into the Hard Mode.
If you start Hard Mode with a new save file, you will definitely be able to maintain a thrilling experience throughout. But if you’ve already leveled up to Level 999, players choosing Hard Mode, given the excessively high stats, would likely struggle to feel thrilled.
Since 999 is the highest that players can level up their Arisen, that makes sense. Once a character is completely maxed out, it’s difficult to implement a new system that makes the game more challenging for both the more mid-tier high-level characters and the highest-level ones. So, players who want to get the most out of Hard Mode will find it more satisfying via a new save or an Arisen that has yet to be totally maxed out. Between Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s Norgan content, new dungeons to explore, and a Hard Mode, Capcom’s open-world fantasy RPG feels like a completely fresh experience now.
There are plenty of great new features in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, and Hard Mode is the cherry on top of the game’s long list of upgrades. Dragon’s Dogma 2 now has the chance to finally feel like the game it was meant to be. Not many games get a second chance at being in the spotlight, but games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky have proven that a rough launch state doesn’t have to mean the end. Game comebacks are great to see, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 definitely gets that new lease on life with Dark Arisen and the 4.0 update.
