Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen has proven to be a fantastic upgrade to Capcom’s open-world RPG, and one of the best ways that gameplay has been expanded is through the Relic Expedition loot grind. This kind of gameplay loop formula gives Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen a special touch of Diablo, and it’s deeply addictive in the best way. Relic-focused grinding isn’t exactly anything new to the Dragon’s Dogma series. The first entry had a Relic loop in its own Dark Arisen expansion, but after being absent from Dragon’s Dogma 2 for two years, its arrival packs an even bigger punch.

There are plenty of gameplay fixes in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen that make the expansion worthwhile, but the Relic loop is definitely one of the main stars of the show. Whether one’s a longtime Dragon’s Dogma player, Diablo fan, or just an overall RPG lover, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen‘s Relic Expedition Cycle has a sense of familiarity that still manages to add something that feels incredibly fresh to the experience.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Spices Things Up With a Diablo-Style Loot Hunt

Leading up to the Dark Arisen release, it was abundantly clear that Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s Norgan region was going to be the expansion’s centerpiece. A new addition to the map is exciting enough, but the Relic Expedition gameplay loop that plays a core role in this region brings even more depth to Dark Arisen. Ultimately, depth has been the heart of Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s long-awaited expansion. Whether it’s more reactive Pawns, a new campaign storyline, or even upgrading Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s vocations, each tweak and change has been focused on adding deeper gameplay layers instead of just focusing on size.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 was a solid game at launch, but it still left a bit to be desired. That’s what has made Dark Arisen such a satisfying expansion, because it finally brings the extra complexity that fans were hoping to have from the beginning. With Norgan, the Relic Expedition Cycle literally makes exploration far more rewarding. Dragon’s Dogma 2 was already an open-world game with good exploration, but now that feature truly feels worth it.

How Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen’s Relic Loop Works

  • Relics are exclusive to the Norgan region.
  • Relics are found by defeating enemies and searching caves and ruins.
  • When found, Relics are unidentified items.
  • Relics have to be appraised by Jiera at the Norgandian Settlement.
  • Once appraised, Relics can be used as armor, weapons, and other useful equipment.

This approach to relics creates an incredibly fun cycle of exploring, discovering, and then surprise. It’s a great way to incentivize players to search every possible corner of Norgan, and another key gameplay update has made the hunt even better: the Eternal Ferrystone. Before Dark Arisen launched, Capcom added the Eternal Ferrystone to Dragon’s Dogma 2, finally allowing players to use fast travel as they please. This streamlines Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s exploration in a major way, and even though the Eternal Ferrystone might not suit every player, it makes discovering new loot and returning to the Norgandian Settlement for appraisal far easier.

Now Is the Perfect Time to Jump Into Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 wasn’t a bad game at launch, but it was clear that it needed a little more time in the oven to reach its full potential. Player feedback was quite mixed when it first released, and that has likely kept a lot of potential players away over the years. The Dark Arisen expansion has completely changed the narrative, though. Now, there is so much more gameplay depth and exploration to revel in, making now the ideal time to check out Dragon’s Dogma 2 and finally see what it’s all about.

Dark Arisen’s Relic Expedition Cycle has a sense of familiarity that still manages to add something that feels incredibly fresh to the experience.

Capcom could have easily left Dragon’s Dogma 2 alone and let it remain in its past state, but the company thankfully saw the benefit in allowing a dev team to give the open-world RPG the extra dose of content needed to make the game a stronger experience. Between the many gameplay upgrades and Dragon’s Dogma 2 finally coming to the Switch 2, there is now a chance for the game to have a second chance in the spotlight. With so many new games coming out in October, it’s hard for a two-year-old game like Dragon’s Dogma 2 to stand out, but Dark Arisen has managed to reignite a solid amount of hype.

Even if Dark Arisen is the only expansion that Dragon’s Dogma 2 ever gets, it has been a major game-changer. Exploring and finding items and weapons in Norgan gives Dragon’s Dogma 2 hours of extra gameplay, and that’s simply the tip of the iceberg when it comes to added content. It’s been a long road, but those who have stuck with Dragon’s Dogma 2 since the beginning and also gamers who were once wary of jumping into its world now have plenty of reason to revel in some great open-world fantasy exploration.
