Electronic Arts has officially shut down console multiplayer servers for a solid multiplayer game, ending online support on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Monday, June 22. The shutdown closes the book on a decade-long run for the 2015 game, which experimented with the Battlefield franchise and shifted it away from military warfare and into a cops-and-robbers setup. Of course, this is not the only EA game to have recently been shut down.
In 2026 alone, EA has already shut down services for games like Anthem and the PS3 multiplayer version of Dragon Age: Inquisition, with more shutdowns continuing across its catalog. For example, EA is also scheduled to end support for Plants vs. Zombies HD on iOS (June 24), further reinforcing the ongoing rotation of aging online infrastructure. EA does tend to announce these shutdowns months in advance at the very least, which is not always the case for even major publishers, and fans have known about the latest shutdown since May.
EA Hit With More Layoffs
EA employees have apparently been left reeling, as the company announces more layoffs impacting workers across multiple countries.
Battlefield Hardline Has Officially Shut Down
On June 22, EA shut down the console servers for Battlefield Hardline. It was delisted in May and can no longer be purchased, but if anyone owns it and has it installed, the single-player campaign is still playable. It launched to mixed reviews but still had fans, and the one bit of good news here is that the PC version is unaffected. Fans can still play it on that platform, although anyone who does not own a PC and prefers it on PlayStation or Xbox is out of luck. On June 22, fans watched the game sunset, and it was a bittersweet moment to witness.

A recent post on the r/Battlefield subreddit (by user King_Throned), as first reported by Insider Gaming, shows the last two minutes of gameplay they had in Battlefield Hardline before the servers shut down. As of this writing, it has over 5000 upvotes, 300 comments, and 6 rewards. The sentiment shared by King_Throned, as well as many fans of the Battlefield games, is undoubtedly one final GG for all the criminals and cops who played the game over the years. Another user shared the farewell message posted by the Battlefield team on the game’s menu: “We are sorry, but servers for this title have been shut down.”
It’s worth noting that the next EA game closure is not far away. EA will officially shut down all online services, in-game purchasing, and online support for Madden NFL 23 on July 13, too. An annualized franchise makes some sense, especially as NFL 24, NFL 25, and NFL 26 have been released since then, and Madden NFL 27 will be released in August 2026. Grid Legends is being shut down later this year, and all the while, it’s never good to see the plug pulled for a video game.

Of course, this is not solely an EA issue. Bethesda is shutting down Elder Scrolls Blades on June 30, as another upcoming-yet-soon shutdown, and more are on the horizon across several developers and publishers. Such appears to be the fate of any game that requires online support.
