Fans of EA-published games should brace themselves, as yet another game from the company is shutting down soon, with even more permanently closing later this year. EA keeps a running list of games it is shutting down, which ensures that fans have time to revisit the titles before they are taken offline forever. It’s a bummer that EA games are shut down frequently enough to require such a list to exist, but it’s better than not getting any heads-up at all.
EA has shut down all kinds of games this year, with Anthem‘s closure kicking things off in January. Most of the games shut down by EA are sports and racing games, with the shutdowns presumably coming about due to licensing issues and fans of said games moving on to newer titles. The next game being shut down by EA isn’t a sports or racing game, but its closure is also not exactly a surprise.

- Apex Legends (Nintendo Switch) – August 4
- NHL 22 – August 31
- NHL 23 – August 31
- Grid Legends – September 11
It’s been confirmed that the Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends is shutting down on August 4. EA released the Apex Legends Switch port back in 2021, and its technical shortcomings ensured that it was never going to be as popular as the battle royale has proven to be on other platforms. As EA and developer Respawn Entertainment continue releasing substantial new content for Apex Legends, supporting the lackluster Switch version has seemed increasingly like a waste of resources. So, while it may come as a disappointment to anyone that may still be playing Apex Legends on the Switch 1, its closure makes sense for the future of the game.

On the bright side, Apex Legends has been released on Nintendo Switch 2, and that version of the game is going to remain operational. Apex Legends on the Switch 2 is a significant upgrade compared to its Switch 1 counterpart, and shouldn’t be in danger of shutting down at any point in the near future. Migrating to the Switch 2 is a great option for Apex Legends fans that have Nintendo’s newest console, but those that have yet to upgrade will unfortunately have to make peace with losing access to the game come August 4.
Apex Legends‘ Switch port isn’t the only EA game shutting down in August. It’s also been confirmed that two NHL games are shutting down this month, with NHL 22 and NHL 23 servers closing on August 31. Hockey game fans should be sure to get their fill of those games’ online features while they still can, though their offline modes will still be playable after the shut-down date.
Finally, it’s been confirmed that Grid Legends is shutting down on September 11. Chances are that there will be even more EA shutdowns confirmed in the weeks ahead, though, so fans should keep an eye out for more announcements.
