The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel is reportedly on track for a 2028 or later release, according to possibly the most consistently reliable Bethesda insider ever. The unofficial launch window update arrived hot on the heels of only the second TES 6 teaser to date.

Bethesda revealed the full official title of the sixth mainline Elder Scrolls game on November 3, just under half an hour past noon ET. The announcement was accompanied by a new video teaser for the long-awaited open-world RPG, confirming its setting and corroborating an earlier story leak.

TES 6 Release Date Set for 2028 or Later, Insider Says

The Skyrim Sequel Said to be a Bit Past the Halfway Point of Development

Reacting to the announcement 20 minutes later, Bloomberg News reporter Jason Schreier cautioned fans against expecting TES 6: Sentinel anytime soon. “Sorry to say this game is still more than 2 years away,” he wrote on Bluesky. Schreier also recalled that Bethesda’s official Elder Scrolls 6 announcement came so early because the company wanted to preempt the fan backlash it correctly anticipated over the reveal that its next major project at the time was a multiplayer game—Fallout 76, announced minutes earlier during the same E3 showcase.

I think a lot of people forget that The Elder Scrolls VI was only announced in 2018 (along with Starfield) to soften the blow of Fallout 76 — “Don’t worry, even though we’re making a multiplayer game we’ve got single-player stuff coming too!”

The video confirmation that Elder Scrolls 6 is subtitled Sentinel premiered exactly eight years, four months, and 24 days after that June 2018 announcement gave many vocal fans hope they would get to play it before Skyrim is on the verge of turning 15. Not only do Schreier’s new comments signal that the currently 3,068-day wait will extend well beyond 3,700 days before TES 6 finally materializes, Bethesda itself suggested the same, albeit in more ambiguous language. “It’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more,” a company spokesperson said in a prepared statement accompanying the November 3 title reveal.

By All Accounts, TES 6 Development Is Progressing About as Well as Can be Expected

Following half a decade’s worth of pre-production with a skeleton crew, TES 6 entered active development around October 2023, according to former Bethesda Head of Publishing Pete Hines. With roughly three years of full-fledged production behind it and an estimated two-plus still ahead, the open-world fantasy RPG appears to be following a fairly conventional production timeline by modern AAA standards.

Development cycles of five years or longer became increasingly common in the late 2010s and are closer to the lower end of the range for major productions as of late 2026. The reasons for that are multifold, but largely come down to software development being an inherently unpredictable undertaking, which has been the case long before AAA projects started costing in the hundreds of millions of dollars. After Skyrim turns 15 on November 11, the next unfortunate reminder of how long it has been since that E3 2018 showcase arrives in early 2027, as Skyrim will officially be closer to TES 2: Daggerfall than Elder Scrolls 6 on January 2.
