A former Rockstar developer who has worked on games like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 is making a third-person survival horror game, and it looks like the best of Resident Evil and Bloodborne mixed into one reality. Titled Black Tides Draga’s Wake, the game is still in the early stages of development, but its latest gameplay trailer has excited many Resident Evil and Bloodborne fans.

Black Tides Draga’s Wake is being developed by indie studio Strange Creature Factory, founded by Gregory Strangis. Strangis is a character artist who has worked on AAA titles at Rockstar and Naughty Dog. He has also worked on big-budget Hollywood movies and collaborated with top directors like Guillermo del Toro. He is now working on his independent game, Black Tides Draga’s Wake, which he describes as a long-time dream come true.

Draga’s Wake Showcases Brutal Combat

Some fans have compared the combat in Black Tides Draga’s Wake to games like Bloodborne for an obvious reason. The game seems to have the same seamless flow from long-range attacks into melee combat. Protagonist Draga can be seen shooting enemies from afar before finishing them with brutal and grotesque hand-to-hand attacks. In a recent interview with Insider Gaming, creative director Gregory Strangis acknowledged the similarities, saying, “Obviously, there’s maybe some people [who] see [the game] and they feel some kind of Bloodborne references there.”

It’s a Story That Fans of Resident Evil Can Resonate With

Black Tides Draga’s Wake depicts an alternate history set in the early 1900s. Strange creatures and dangerous doomsday cultists have plagued the world, and they seem to be tied to ancient gods. Visually, some of its hostile creatures look a lot like the Las Plagas-infected enemies in Resident Evil 4. The cultists mentioned in Draga’s Wake‘s description could also be compared to the Ganados in the same title.

In the trailer, protagonist Draga’s arm turns into a blade that he uses to tear enemies apart. This also means that Draga is infected, and the developer has revealed that he can absorb bodies to gain power. However, his infection feels more like a double-sided superpower, as his new abilities might have some sort of side effect. The mechanic might be loosely comparable to what gamers have seen in games like Prototype, where the protagonist relies on skills that also consume, transform, or damage his body.

Developer Strange Creature Factory is currently seeking a publisher, and the game is still in the very early stages of development, even though the trailers may make it seem otherwise. As for the release date, Draga’s Wake hopes to hit the shelves in early 2029. That might sound discouraging to fans of third-person survival horror games. However, the team is clearly aiming for a AAA-level experience and does not want to sacrifice quality for quick profits. Fans who want to keep up with Draga’s Wake can wishlist it on Steam and follow Strange Creature Factory on social media.
