During the Xbox Games Showcase, Playground Games released a new story-based trailer for Fable, not only confirming the return of the Jack of Blades, as well as the main villain of the story, but putting a new twist on the character with an MCU star. It has been a long and winding road for Fable, and while the team at Playground Games is slowly approaching the light at the end of the tunnel, fans are unfortunately going to have to wait just a bit longer before they can go hands on with this new vision of Albion.

In keeping with fan expectations for this popular franchise, Playground Games has seemingly had a tough road to walk. Not only is the studio attempting to innovate and push the franchise forward after the series has been relatively dormant for a number of years, but also respect what has come before. Based on a previous gameplay showcase for Fable, it appears the studio is on the right track as it even made the franchise creator tear up. As players have seen, iconic locations like Bowserstone are coming back, along with a morality system that will have a large impact on how the player is seen by NPCs throughout the world. Until now, though, the game’s story and what will drive players forward has largely been a mystery.

Fable Introduces Its Main Villain

As part of the 2026 Xbox Showcase, Fable was part of the event with two new trailers, the first of which introduced the game’s villain. Known as Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, performed by Hayley Atwell, a person who MCU fans will know as Agent Peggy Carter. The trailer continues the sort of mockumentary-style interview format, with Atwell’s character recalling a tragic story that ultimately caused her powers to manifest and calling herself the hero of the story, disillusioned with the current state of Albion. She takes it upon herself to fix things, which will put her on a collision course with players, as teased in the trailer.

However, the reveal of Isabel wasn’t the only surprising reveal. In an interesting twist, the trailer also reveals the return of the Jack of Blades to Fable, a legacy character that longtime fans will know well. Rumors have been swirling around the possible return of this character, who operated as the first game’s main antagonist. Jack represented an ancient entity of the void, using his mask to host bodies and essentially live forever, which is likely how this potentially new version has come to be. Either way, players will need to wait to understand how the new version’s relationship with the current world of Albion will play out, especially since it doesn’t appear that he’s the main villain this time around.

In addition, the second trailer also reconfirmed the recent Fable delay, as the game has been pushed out of 2026 entirely and will be launching on February 23, 2027. In addition, players will be able to start pre-ordering the game today to lock in a Pre-Order Content pack that features a Chicken Suit cosmetic for their character to wear. It’ll also come with 3 in-game gifts as well, a Wild Flower Bouquet, a Toy Chicken, and a Scones & Jam Picnic Hamper. Playground confirms that these items can be used to boost the player’s reputation, perhaps gifting them to an NPC.

For players who want a bit more, there’s also a Premium Edition available, granting 5 days of early access, something which should be familiar as many Xbox Game Studio titles have an early access option. This Premium Edition also comes with 2 cosmetic outfits, the Splendid Armor and the Bastard Armor. This edition also comes with 9 in-game gifts, a digital art book, soundtrack, and a post-launch expansion called Order of the Hero. Playground Games has confirmed this expansion will be a story-driven adventure that has players going up against a secretive ancient cult in an all-new region of Albion. There’s also a collector’s edition which comes with everything above, as well as a lapel pin, hard cover art book, steelbook case, and a Jack of Blades statue.
