Fallout 3 Remake exists, according to gaming industry insider Jeff Gerstmann, who openly talked about the project in a recent livestream. Though there have long been rumors of a hypothetical remaster or remake of the original Fallout 3 from 2008, concrete information about the game has been remarkably scarce, to the point that many still believe it’s not actually a thing. Yet, Bethesda’s certain recent outings suggest something is definitely up on that front.
Specifically, it was the release of Oblivion Remastered that gave additional credence to rumors of remakes or remasters of the Bethesda Fallout titles. Remastered or remade versions of classic Gamebryo/Creation Engine Bethesda RPGs had also been mentioned in the September 2023 FTC court documents supplied by Microsoft, so the only thing that’s still up in the air is whether Bethesda actually kickstarted all the projects in the end and, if so, how far along they might be. Gerstmann claims to know more.
Fallout 3 Remake Is Definitely A Thing, Jeff Gerstmann Claims
Jeff Gerstmann spoke about the remake of Fallout 3 in episode 213 of the Jeff Gerstmann Show, where he was discussing the recent barrage of layoffs and restructurings at Xbox. Specifically, he was talking about Bethesda specifically, wherein the company announced it would hunker down and focus on its most beloved and successful franchises: “I think if you were expecting more from Starfield […] this is a kind of acknowledgment here that they’re going to quadruple down on the next Elder Scrolls, and they’re probably going to get a goddamn Fallout into production,” he said. “Bethesda would not do a Fallout remake themselves, in fact someone else has put in quite a lot of work into a Fallout 3 remake that has yet to officially materialize. And I don’t even know if that game is, I assume that that is still happening, but maybe it is dead. Who can say? But I have seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake, so someone somewhere made something.” If footage of gameplay exists, then there’s no doubt about the game having entered production, and even though Xbox is quite trigger-happy as of late, a remake of Fallout 3 falls perfectly into the company’s renewed focus on core franchises.
Gerstmann isn’t the only one to have recently chimed in on Fallout 3‘s alleged remake, either. Microsoft insider Jez Corden recently suggested the potential release date for Fallout 3 remake, claiming that it might launch sometime next year. Notably, as the filming for the third season of the Fallout TV show began in May, it’s likely to release sometime in 2027, and coinciding with the release of the Fallout 3 remake would likely be a financial slam dunk for Bethesda.

Jez Corden, specifically, had been providing updates on Bethesda’s backend projects for a long while now. Specifically, he has stayed firm about the Fallout remakes/remasters launching in 2027, though there had never been mention of him seeing actual gameplay. That bit comes from Gerstmann alone for the time being, and it’s the strongest proof that there is movement in these projects, although away from prying eyes. This is all still worth taking with a pinch of salt at hand, of course, but Gerstmann has been fairly reliable in the past, and he usually avoids talking about unverified projects if possible, so he’s got plenty of credence.

Looking at things from a broader point of view, it seems all but obvious that Bethesda would jump at the opportunity to remake or remaster both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas as soon as possible, given how successful the Oblivion Remastered release had been.
