Despite appearing to be a generally terrifying and large mutation of a crab, Mirelurks can actually be quite useful in Fallout 76. Some players will have the chance to tame them, and add them as a defense to their C.A.M.P. setup. They appear frequently throughout the game, making it easy to farm them and their materials.

There are a multitude of locations where you can find Mirelurks within Fallout 76, similar to other enemies like Sentry Bots or Assaultrons. However, there are a few areas in particular where you’ll find a ton of Mirelurks at once, including a Mirelurk Queen, and sometimes even eggs.

To speed up the process of farming Mirelurks, below, you’ll find the best locations to spot them, and the different types you’ll find there. There are some locations that are more beginner-friendly, and will be closer to Vault 76.

Mirelurk Location #1: Ohio River Adventures

You can find this area near to the river on the western side of the map. Here, you’ll find a whole group of Mirelurks just at the edge of the river. There will be some human enemies around here as well.

Mirelurk Location #2: Spruce Knob Lake

To locate Spruce Knob Lake, you’ll find it in the southern area of the map, just south of the large, green Spruce Knob on the map. Here, you’ll find loads of Mirelurks, including Softshell Mirelurks, Diseased Mirelurks, and more.

Mirelurk Location #3: Highland Marsh

This location has the most Mirelurks you can find on the map. This includes a Mirelurk Queen, Softshell Mirelurks, Steelshell Mirelurks, and many more. You’ll also find some eggs in this area for hatchlings. Highland Marsh is towards the very top of the map, on the eastern side. It’s located directly east of Vault 94.

Mirelurk Location #4: Toxic Dried Lakebed

To find the Toxic Sried Lakebed, make your way northeast of Vault 76. You’ll find the lakebed just next to Wavy Willard’s Water Park, and directly north of Clarksburg. In this area, there will be tons of Mirelurks to hunt down, as well as one Mirelurk Queen.

Mirelurk Location #5: Big Bend Tunnel

This area can be found in the southeastern region of the map. You can find it near AMS Corporate Headquarters. In this location, you’ll find a family of Mirelurks just outside the tunnel. If you head northeast to the Quarry X3, marked by the 2 in the map image above, you’ll find a few Mirelurks here as well.

Mirelurk Uses in Fallout 76

Mirelurks can be helpful for a few different things. They can provide you with:

  • Mirelurk Meat
  • Caps
  • Ammunition
  • Eggs

These are only a few examples of what you can get from defeating Mirelurks. You’ll always get meat after killing one, but some variations, such as the Mirelurk Queen, can drop more items, such as Marine Underarmor, Stimpaks, Gears, and more.

You can also choose to tame a Mirelurk and set them up at your camp. To do this, however, you’ll need to get the Animal Friend perk card, found in the Charisma category. With this equipped, you’ll just need to point your gun at the creature you wish to tame, and you’ll have a chance to send them to your camp. You’ll only be able to tame creatures that are found completely alone in a chance encounter, though. This means you won’t be able to get any animals to your camp if they are found in a group.
