The upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance is set to see the return of Final Fantasy 16‘s protagonist Clive Rosfield as part of the game’s roster of classic Final Fantasy characters. Despite debuting more recently than some of Final Fantasy Resonance‘s guest characters, Clive has become one of the most popular protagonists in the series thanks to his tragic story and phenomenal performance by voice actor Ben Starr. Now, Ifrit’s Dominant returns in a new Final Fantasy game releasing on October 22.
While Final Fantasy 16 is one of the more controversial entries in the series, largely due to its shift towards full action RPG combat instead of the turn-based and Active Time Battle systems the series is known for, characters like Clive were a standout of the game. Watching Clive build relationships with characters like his brother Joshua and childhood friend Jill endeared him to many Final Fantasy 16 players. Clive will soon appear in a whole new context via his Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance.
Clive Will Represent Final Fantasy 16 in FF Resonance
Final Fantasy Resonance is a new entry in the franchise that adopts the popular HD-2D JRPG art style that Square Enix games have pioneered recently. Unlike Final Fantasy 16, Resonance returns to the franchise’s roots with a traditional turn-based combat system complete with a twist on the classic Summons mechanic that has appeared throughout the series. Called Visions, this mechanic lets players summon echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters from throughout the series’s past to fight alongside players and offer them unique skills. In his Vision form, Clive transforms into the Eikon Ifrit and attacks enemies with a powerful Meteor Strike skill, crashing a burning meteor into them. As an offline single-player game based on the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Final Fantasy Resonance has a lot of overlap with the mobile game’s mechanics. Since Ifrit is a summonable Esper in Brave Exvius, it’s unclear how Clive’s Vision will differ from this summon version of Ifrit.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius officially ended service on October 30, 2024, but its legacy will live on through Final Fantasy Resonance.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1/2 on October 22. Since Final Fantasy 16 isn’t yet available on either the Switch 1 or Switch 2, despite being heavily rumored to receive a Switch 2 port, Final Fantasy Resonance will be Clive’s first appearance on a Nintendo console. There is still hope for a Final Fantasy 16 Switch 2 port, as director Naoki Yoshida has teased a Switch 2 release in the past, though nothing has manifested thus far.
Clive has been a fairly busy Final Fantasy protagonist despite being the most recent star of a mainline entry. Prior to his appearance in Final Fantasy Resonance, he’d appeared in a Final Fantasy 14 collab event, as a playable character in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, and even as a guest fighter in Tekken 8. If Final Fantasy fans still can’t get enough of Clive, then Resonance has them covered when it launches this fall.
