Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi said he put forward a case for a full physical release of the upcoming open-world RPG, but was limited in his authority over what he could push. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8 on all current-gen platforms.
As the climactic finale of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will take players on a mission to stop Sephiroth and avert a disastrous Meteor from crashing down on the world. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be a much larger adventure than its predecessors, with new places to explore and colossal bosses to take down. Despite being a demanding game on a technical level, PS5 Pro players will have access to a new graphics mode via PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to fine-tune the game as needed.
Hamaguchi Pushed For a Full Physical Release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Although Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will arrive digitally and physically, the latter format was not the exact solution the game’s director had initially pushed for. In a Radio Times interview, Hamaguchi said that he understood players’ frustrations when it was revealed that PS5 and Xbox Series X copies of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would not include the full game on a disc. Instead, Square Enix stated that FF7 Revelation players must download the rest of the upcoming title onto their consoles. Unlike the Switch 2’s Game-Key card method, the Blu-ray disc release will not be completely void of content. Hamaguchi said that the opening segment will be included with each PS5 and Xbox copy, though a download prompt will eventually appear. The Revelation director said that, although he used his position to argue for a full physical edition, the final decision was the result of negotiations between the development and publishing teams.

Hamaguchi previously defended Square Enix’s choice to make Final Fantasy 7 Revelation a mostly-digital release. The director stated that since physical game discs have capacity limitations, it would compromise the quality of the game and require additional development time to ensure the game could ship in a feasible format. Instead, Square Enix opted not to limit the developers and pushed for the highest-quality experience that the game has to offer without any constraints.
Should Hamaguchi have been successful in his push, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would have required multiple game discs just to ensure the game would fit in a single package. Although PS5 Blu-ray discs can hold up to 100GB of data each, Xbox Series X discs are capped at 50GB. Given that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation requires at least 200GB of available storage space, a fully physical release would require two or three discs on PS5 and at least four discs on Xbox Series X.
As the gaming industry shifts towards digital exclusivity on consoles, Hamaguchi said that the PC gaming market has already been accustomed to digital downloads for several years. Although gamers have protested against an all-digital future, it remains to be seen how many physical copies of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will fly off store shelves in 2027 and beyond.
