Final Fantasy Resonance is already off to a strong start on Steam, as the game has achieved a peak player count of over 38,000 and rising just over a day into its release window. Final Fantasy Resonance is an HD-2D title that uses a similar graphical style as the Octopath Traveler series.

The main story of Final Fantasy Resonance is a retelling of the first major story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile title that was shut down in 2025. Developed by Square Enix’s Creative Studio 5 and Lancarse, Final Fantasy Resonance features a turn-based combat system, rather than the series’ traditional Active Time Battle mechanic. Additionally, Final Fantasy Resonance features popular franchise characters such as Cloud and Squall as collectible Visions that can aid the party in battle and teach them new abilities.

Final Fantasy Resonance’s Player Count is Nothing Short of Impressive

As of this writing, Final Fantasy Resonance had a peak Steam player count of 38,182, which was set during the morning of Saturday, October 24. Final Fantasy Resonance‘s peak Steam player count is currently the third-highest total for the Final Fantasy franchise, behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 14. By comparison, Rebirth‘s peak count of 40,564 was set during the launch of the Steam port in January 2025, while FF14‘s peak Steam count of 95,150 was achieved during the launch of the Endwalker expansion in December 2021.

Along with its rising player count, Final Fantasy Resonance currently holds an overwhelmingly positive Steam rating of 97% across 1,517 player reviews worldwide, making it the highest-rated entry in the Final Fantasy series on Steam so far. Some reviews compared Final Fantasy Resonance‘s turn-based combat system to Final Fantasy 10, where each unit’s abilities and spells can alter the flow of battle. Others stated that, while the user interface and graphical style may not be for everyone, Resonance‘s combat feels both familiar and new thanks to the Visions that players can discover throughout the world map.

The launch of Final Fantasy Resonance came amid a busy slate for the Final Fantasy series. Starting October 28, a crossover between the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series and Final Fantasy 14 will kick off with a limited-time activity called Keybound Brawler that will be held within FF14‘s Manderville Gold Saucer. Participating players can earn cosmetic rewards, including glamour sets based on Tifa’s and Barret’s outfits from FF7 Remake, until the launch of FF14‘s upcoming Evercold expansion. More information about Evercold, including a potential release date, will be discussed during Tokyo FanFest throughout Halloween weekend.

Aside from Steam, Final Fantasy Resonance is also available on all current-gen consoles, including Nintendo Switch 2, with physical and digital editions now available for purchase. With momentum continuing to build, it remains to be seen how many more players Final Fantasy Resonance will gain throughout its opening weekend.
