The release of the E.T. LEGO set comes just before the classic family film celebrates a big milestone. 2027 will officially mark the 45th anniversary of the movie, which originally debuted to fan and critical acclaim in June 1982. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is commonly considered one of the most influential movies ever made and held the title of highest-grossing film of all time for eleven years after its debut, eventually surpassed by the first Jurassic Park film. E.T. has seen multiple re-releases to honor major anniversaries of its original premiere, most recently appearing in IMAX theaters in 2022 to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
E.T. joins multiple popular movies and film franchises that received new LEGO sets earlier in 2026. The Harry Potter franchise received multiple LEGO sets at the start of the year, including everything from the hospital wing at Hogwarts to the Sorting Hat Ceremony. Star Wars was also the subject of multiple sets throughout the year, most recently launching a statue of an AT-RT Driver Helmet and a scaled-up version of the Darth Vader minifigure. A new Boba Fett LEGO set is also rumored to be releasing alongside the E.T. set in August.
LEGO looks to have plenty more on the way throughout the rest of the year, between big crossovers and exciting new ideas. A recent leak suggested that LEGO is working on a unique Donkey Kong set, replicating one of the franchise’s original arcade machines with a playable LEGO version of the classic game. LEGO is also rumored to launch its first crossover with the iconic Dragon Ball anime franchise, reportedly releasing a diorama of Shenron in November. LEGO fans should have lots to look forward to with a variety of sets launching during the second half of 2026.
