First-person soulslike Valor Mortis is officially set to launch on October 13, as developer One More Level puts a fresh twist on the familiar genre. Soulslikes are among the most popular titles around, and Valor Mortis looks set to deliver a seriously unique experience.

Valor Mortis is the latest title from Polish studio One More Level, which is best known as the developer behind the Ghostrunner series. Both Ghostrunner games were well-received by critics, but the developer has taken on an entirely new genre with Valor Mortis: soulslikes. FromSoftware titles are the gold standard in the genre, so One More Level has a huge task on its hands if it’s to please fans.

Valor Mortis Drops October 13, Offers New Soulslike on Steam

While soulslikes are usually third-person, Valor Mortis takes a first-person approach, providing a fresh take on a familiar formula. Despite this, it still has the dark aesthetic typical of most soulslikes, putting players in the shoes of a soldier brought back to life from a battlefield grave. After their resurrection, they discover a plague that has swept the continent, and players will “witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural.”

The gameplay has everything a soulslike fan will want from a game. It features a deep combat system with parries, dashes, and finishers, as well as supernatural abilities to enhance attacks. Importantly, “every death is a chance to grow stronger,” which is a key soulslike ingredient.

You are William, a soldier of the Grande Armée brought back from a battlefield grave. But the Europe you awaken to is not the one you sacrificed for. A mysterious plague now sweeps the continent, and you have been reborn with its corrupting power pulsing through your veins.

Valor Mortis Key Features

  • Deep soulslike combat in first-person perspective
  • 19th-century aesthetic and alternate history storyline
  • Encounter real historical figures
  • $39.99 price tag
  • Voice cast including Vincent Cassel, Jennifer English, and James Alexander

At launch, Valor Mortis will cost just $39.99. In today’s gaming market, that’s a real steal. Many game developers are hiking up prices at the moment, so it’s refreshing to see a game commit to a bargain price. There is a Deluxe Edition that will cost $59.99, which is still cheaper than many AAA titles nowadays. This comes with a major story DLC planned to release in 2027 and several cosmetic packs.

Post-launch, One More Level has already committed to delivering free new content updates to Valor Mortis. Given its price tag, it’s all the more impressive that the developer has made this commitment ahead of time. In a hands-on-preview earlier this year, GameRant described it as a lovechild of Lies of P and BioShock. If it can live up to that billing upon its October 13 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, then it’s definitely a new must-play soulslike.
