The newest Fire Emblem gave fans plenty of reasons to be excited about the game ahead of its launch. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems heavily teased the game’s connection to Fire Emblem: Three Houses ahead of release, taking place in the same world as Three Houses and featuring multiple returning characters. Fortune’s Weave also took inspiration from Three Houses in the structure of its story, focusing on four separate protagonists that eventually weave into one connected storyline. Now, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has already made waves in Japan, crossing a significant milestone in its first week.

Japanese gaming publication Famitsu confirmed that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has made a major splash in Japan. Sales reports for the week of September 14 to September 20 revealed that the Fire Emblem game surpassed 100,000 sales in the country, just three days after its September 17 release. Fortune’s Weave topped Japanese video game sales charts for its debut week, beating other new releases like Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter and Marvel’s Wolverine by a considerable margin. Famitsu’s sales data notably only includes physical sales numbers, not representing digital sales for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave or any other featured games.

The early success of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave comes as the game has seen positive reception from both fans and critics. Fortune’s Weave has been praised as one of the best games in the entire franchise, both expanding on Fire Emblem‘s signature strategy combat and adding new traditional turn-based JRPG combat segments. The game’s narrative has also been a point of heavy praise among fans, with the four storylines each said to be strong in their own right. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave even received its first award nominations, being named as a finalist for “Best Storytelling” and “Console Game of the Year” for the Golden Joystick Awards.
The launch of Fortune’s Weave marks the Fire Emblem franchise’s first major game on the Switch 2 after a successful run on Switch. In addition to the previously mentioned Three Houses, the Switch received a second main-series Fire Emblem game in 2023 with the release of Fire Emblem Engage. The Switch also hosted multiple spin-off games with the Fire Emblem Warriors games, including both the original game and Three Houses follow-up Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Nintendo has also added both of the Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem games to its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave should serve as one of the highlights of a busy holiday season ahead for Nintendo. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort will officially debut on October 22 as a sequel to Nintendo Switch Sports, adding games such as archery, basketball, and skateboarding. Arguably Nintendo’s biggest release of the Fall will come with the launch of the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake in November, overhauling the beloved adventure game with impressive graphics and a wealth of gameplay improvements. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave aims to maintain its early momentum, with plenty in store from Nintendo in the near future.
