SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

With MultiVersus set to relaunch later next month, speculation around future additions to the Warner Bros. platform fighter’s roster has begun to grow once again. Characters from classic Cartoon Network shows have been hinted at in recent promotional material, but this game’s publisher owns a wide variety of other properties that also seem to have a chance of showing up. DC heroes facing off against the likes of the Looney Tunes is an image that matches the tone of similar titles like Super Smash Bros. and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, but the inclusion of Game of Thrones‘ Arya Stark has established that MultiVersus is open to more mature source material as well.

There have been several absurd memes related to including characters from serious drama shows, but a MultiVersus developer addressed Walter White requests back before the game had gone on hiatus. The level of interest fans have in the Breaking Bad protagonist led to him actually being acknowledged as a possibility, but the reality of the rights of an AMC show being separate from the WB umbrella makes that crossover highly unlikely. Similar content like HBO shows, on the other hand, are both fair game and already have a precedent in a fighter like Arya.

MultiVersus’ Strange Character Change Explained

MultiVersus is set to return after a long hiatus that followed its open beta, and one major change to its roster may define its future direction.

Characters From Mature Franchises Aren’t New to MultiVersus

Rick and Morty Represent Adult Humor

There’s some edge to Harley Quinn’s series, but Rick and Morty were essentially the first MultiVersus characters from a less family-friendly animated IP. The topics covered in some of Rick and Morty’s most well-received episodes can venture into some disturbing territory for comedic effect, but it’s almost jarring that they exist alongside cartoons like Bugs Bunny.

Arya Stark’s Game of Thrones Source Material Features Some of Television’s Darkest Moments

The tone and aesthetic of the world that Arya originates contrasts heavily from those seen in any other fighter, causing her to stand out despite her appearance in the MultiVersus art style. Rick and Morty is no stranger to violence of its own, but Game of Thrones features realistic fights and depictions of the most brutal and intimate aspects of its power struggles. If Player First Games was able to make her fit in relatively well with the rest of the cast, it could be a natural progression to see more representatives from the same network.

HBO Characters Who Could Make Sense in MultiVersus

Depending on the direction that the game’s content updates take following its return, the most appropriate choices from HBO’s catalog could vary based on how mature their source material is. There are a few iconic characters from franchises that are completely original to the network, but it’s also possible that content which has been released on it may be able to be licensed as well. Shows like South Park and Aqua Teen Hunger Force have been distributed by HBO in deals that could allow fan requests to come true, and the old-school charm of a fighter like the Iron Giant shows that someone like Spawn is possible. Something like The Sopranos has connections to video games and no shortage of references for moves in combat, but will still require care to fit into MultiVersus‘ art style. Fighters that could come from HBO include:

  • Rhaenyra Targaryen (House of the Dragon)
  • Daenarys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)
  • The Hound (Game of Thrones)
  • Jon Snow (Game of Thrones)
  • Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)
  • Christopher Moltisanti (The Sopranos)
  • Omar Little (The Wire)
  • Stringer Bell (The Wire)
  • Barry Berkman (Barry)
  • Logan Roy (Succession)
  • Kendall Roy (Succession)
  • The Cryptkeeper (Tales from the Crypt)
  • John Oliver (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver)
  • Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
  • Eric Cartman (South Park)
  • Kenny McCormick/Mysterion (South Park)
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm)
  • Spawn (Todd McFarlane’s Spawn)
