Ghost of Yotei‘s wolf petting scene required the game’s director of animation getting on all fours while Atsu actor Erika Ishii patted him. As such, the process of capturing this particularly memorable moment from the game was a lot weirder than Ghost of Yotei fans may have suspected.
As Atsu completes Wolf Dens in Ghost of Yotei, she gradually improves her relationship with a she-wolf that follows her over the course of the game’s story. Although the activities are largely optional, they are also the setting for some of the game’s more emotional moments. Completing Wolf Den locations eventually unlocks a scene in which Atsu finally gets to gently pet her wolf companion, marking the culmination of their relationship.

Ghost of Yotei’s Animation Director Played the Wolf in the Emotional Petting Scene
While the scene itself is touching, the process of animating was somewhat bizarre, as recently revealed by prolific video game actor and Ghost of Yotei star Erika Ishii, who portrays Atsu in the 2025 game. “It was Billy Harper, our director of cinematics, that was on all fours, getting his head patted by me,” the actor recalled in a recent interview with GamesRadar+. Making matters even more unusual, a separate act of colleague petting took place in the immediate setup for this scene, which Ishii witnessed.
The Atsu actor recalled being on a lunch break and walking in on Harper petting Ghost of Yotei creative director Nate Fox. The two were completely unaware Ishii had entered the room and were in the middle of hashing out the technical specifics of the petting scene, like figuring out where Atsu would stand relative to the wolf and how exactly the contact should look. Ishii said they filmed the exchange on the phone without interrupting, including the part where Harper was petting Fox. The actor labeled this anecdote as “one of the most memorable moments” from their time at the studio.
The interview was conducted in the run-up to the April 17 edition of the BAFTA Games Awards, one of 2026’s largest video game events, where Ishii was nominated in the Performer in a Leading Role category. The award ultimately went to Jennifer English for her portrayal of Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Ghost of Yotei, however, won in the Music and Technical Achievement categories during the ceremony. The 2026 BAFTAs marked Ishii’s fourth nomination for their portrayal of Atsu, after previous nominations for Best Lead Performer at the Golden Joystick Awards, Best Performance at The Game Awards, and Outstanding Achievement in Character at the D.I.C.E. Awards, which they won.

April 2 marked the six-month anniversary of Ghost of Yotei‘s critically acclaimed launch. While its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, eventually made its way to PC, there are reportedly no plans for the second entry in Sucker Punch’s series to follow suit. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in early 2026 that Sony may be scaling back its PC porting efforts for several reasons, including lower-than-expected returns and reluctance to bring its catalog to the next Xbox console, which is expected to be capable of playing PC games.
