The Collectors Box of God of War Laufey was officially revealed by the PlayStation UK account, though it has seemingly caused another wave of backlash due to the game not actually being included. It’s a trend within the gaming industry that seems to be picking up steam as of late, though this God of War Laufey announcement comes at a time when Sony is already facing plenty of criticism.
After being announced at the June 2026 State of Play, God of War Laufey is seemingly taking the Kratos-led franchise in a different direction, one that some fans seem to be a little wary of. Still, pre-orders appear to be doing well after going live on September 29, with Sony Santa Monica revealing two versions of God of War Laufey being available for purchase. Fans can opt for the standard version or a special Deluxe Edition which comes with armor sets for Faye and Phranque, as well as an in-game resources pack. However, there now appears to be a third version available for pre-order, though fans may want to read the fine print on this one before placing down their money.
God of War Laufey Collector’s Box Doesn’t Come With The Game
In a listing on the official PlayStation website, the contents of the God of War Laufey Collector Box have been revealed, and it unfortunately doesn’t come with a copy of the game. Just announced on the PlayStation Blog, the Collector’s Box retails for $149.99 and Sony is limiting sales to one box per person. Inside the Collector’s Edition, players will find a mini artbook, a 51-card Oracle Deck, and a light-up resin statue of God of War Laufey protagonist Faye. What isn’t yet known is if this is only one additional version of the game and a more traditional Collector’s Edition is set to be announced alongside the Digital Deluxe and Collector Box.

The reveal is likely to surprise and disappoint fans as Sony Santa Monica’s previous God of War title featured the full game in the Collector’s Edition. In fact, when comparing the two, the God of War Ragnarok Collector’s Edition seemingly had much more to offer, from physical items like a 16-inch Mjölnir replica, dice set, and Vanir Twins Carvings, to a slew of digital in-game goodies. Not to mention, it also came with a printed digital voucher for the full game.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a rising trend within the game industry, as God of War Laufey isn’t the first to do this. Diablo 4 also revealed a Collector’s Box version which included a lot of physical items like the Candle of Creation, but for nearly $100, a copyt of the game wasn’t included. Borderlands 4 also revealed an ECHO-1 Edition, which Gearbox clarified was initially mislabeled as the Collector’s Edition. One of the more high-profile announcements recently came with GTA 6, and while fans are getting a copy of the game regardless of which edition they pre-order, the surprise reveal is that even physical copies will only come with a download code and no disc.
As one would expect, comments left on the social media post have been less than positive, compounding on top of what has been an already difficult 2026 for Sony. While God of War Laufey has been at the center of frustrations and backlash, including criticism from the former Last of Us director, Sony has also taken its fair share of hits from the community over recent decisions as well. For many, one of the bigger ones is the reveal that Sony plans to end physical disc production by 2028, a move that has left both fans and members of the industry questioning the decision.
