A fresh batch of God of War Laufey news has arrived, and the game has once again teased that its combat pays homage to the Devil May Cry series in a delightful way. God of War Laufey is set to be one of the biggest games of 2027, and it could be a great option for longtime Devil May Cry fans to jump into. The gameplay sneak peeks weren’t the only exciting reveal from PlayStation’s announcement, though. Protagonist Faye will be getting an exciting weapon added to her arsenal that is bound to take the Devil May Cry-style combat to even greater heights.
Santa Monica Studio has been careful about what details are shared about God of War Laufey‘s gameplay, but both the summer State of Play reveal and this new preview have made it clear that combat is going to be heavily focused on fast-paced combos. Based on the footage, Faye is obviously a lot lighter on her feet than Kratos, opening the door for a fresh set of combat mechanics to be on display. Playing as Kratos and Faye has to feel distinct, and Santa Monica Studio opting for combat that has major Devil May Cry vibes is a call that holds a lot of promise.
God of War Laufey’s Vertical Devil May Cry Combat Gives Faye Her Own Identity
Since God of War Laufey‘s story is focused mainly on Faye, the game has the unique challenge of needing to feel like it meshes well with the rest of the God of War Norse saga while also maintaining its own identity. Combat is a great starting point, because fighting as Kratos in the Norse saga has been defined by heavy ground-based combat. Kratos’ fighting style was a big departure from the original trilogy, but Faye’s fighting technique is bringing some of that missing flair back.
The original God of War trilogy and Devil May Cry have quite different combat mechanics, but the two share the same love of aerial juggling. Kratos was once able to launch enemies in the air and perform wild airborne combos. Santa Monica Studio went a different direction with its older, Norse realm-based version of Kratos, though. He’s still very much a powerhouse, but the more grounded approach to combat was a risky move. Thankfully, Santa Monica Studio nailed Kratos’ new fighting formula, which gives Faye plenty of room to have her own unique play style.

God of War Laufey Teases Aerial Juggling Combat and a New Weapon
- A mysterious and powerful sword has already been confirmed as one of Faye’s main weapons.
- The new weapon is a bow known as the Serpent Bow.
The introduction of the Serpent Bow adds even greater depth to God of Laufey‘s combat. Faye will be able to use both the sword and Serpent Bow back and forth, which allows for wilder fight combos. The newest God of War Laufey gameplay sneak peek showcased a clip of Faye striking and kicking an enemy into the air and shooting a barrage of arrows into them as they flail around, suspended.
The God of War Laufey pre-order bonuses were also announced alongside the new gameplay footage. Pre-orders are live now, and fans can choose between the standard version of the game or the Digital Deluxe Edition.
Santa Monica Studio could have easily gone the same grounded route taken with Kratos when crafting Faye’s fighting style, but the developer clearly understood that she has to feel incredibly different but still be complimentary. That definitely isn’t an easy balance to achieve, but Santa Monica Studio is capable of nailing this kind of combat shake-up.
God of War Is One of Many Games Set to Kick Off 2027 With a Bang
God of War Laufey‘s release date puts it among some serious competition. Many see this new God of War chapter as the frontrunner when it comes to the February 2027 game calendar, but there is always room for surprises. Games like the long-awaited Fable and Metro 2039 are also staking a claim on February 2027, which makes for a fascinating battleground. It’s reminiscent of this year’s September calendar, and only time will tell which games resonate with players the most.
Playing as Kratos and Faye has to feel distinct…
The God of War Norse saga has brought forth some of the best action games of the last decade, so Laufey has plenty of high expectations to meet. Kratos and Atreus’ journey beautifully balanced meaningful storytelling with punchy, god-like combat. Living up to that puts a lot of pressure on God of War Laufey, but Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog has viewed Faye as an essential part of the overarching story since the beginning of the Norse reboot.
Faye’s actor, Deborah Ann Woll, recently revealed that Barlog pitched the idea for God of War Laufey all the way back in 2018. So, technically, God of War Laufey‘s development has been going on for years, potentially even over a decade. That detail in particular is fascinating, because it makes Kratos’ lack of aerial juggling combat make even more sense in hindsight. I’m speculating here, but it sounds like Barlog and Santa Monica Studio deliberately opted to take away Kratos’ vertical fight mechanics so they could be repurposed for Faye. If that’s the case, then that actually adds an even deeper layer to their relationship, as it literally makes them two halves of a whole.
The wait for God of War Laufey has a few more months to go, but Santa Monica Studio and Sony have already revealed plenty of fascinating details worth being excited about. Between God of War Laufey‘s villains and fast-paced combat, this chapter is shaping up to be a wild ride. These new gameplay clips might be the last bit of info before the game’s launch. Of course, there is definitely a solid chance of Santa Monica Studio revealing a second God of War Laufey trailer at this year’s Game Awards, but there’s no way to know for sure. Until then, both God of War and Devil May Cry fans who have been itching for the return of classic aerial combo combat will finally get a taste of that once God of War Laufey makes its debut.
