Today, after years of waiting, plenty of rumors, a few trailers, and even more leaks, Rockstar Games finally showed the world a good look at the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, a game likely to be one of the biggest entertainment releases in history. The reveal happened on Netflix via a 26-minute-long Extended Look.
The gameplay video starts with Jason and Lucia entering an apartment building while looking for someone named Boobie for a pickup. Jason pets a dog at one point and gets a pop-up of an angel icon, likely indicating he earned some kind of morality credit for the gesture.
As expected, the drug deal quickly goes south, and Jason and Lucia are then forced to fight their way out of the apartment using shotguns and pistols as police raid the building, killing anyone they see.
“Was that Menendez?” asks Lucia about one of the cops as they escape via an elevator. Jason assures her they weren’t spotted before the music kicks in and we see the GTA 6 logo.
After a montage of Vice City, we see Jason and Lucia getting ready for a party. Jason checks the fridge while he waits for Lucia to get dressed. It’s a surprisingly cute and quiet couple’s moment. When she finally gets dressed, Jason replies, “Damn, worth the wait.”
We then see another montage of Vice City action, showing off encounters with random weirdos, Jason and Lucia fighting enemies with guns and fists, and more. When we cut back to Jason and Lucia, the two have arrived at the party a bit late. They hold hands and walk into the event to meet up with Brian, who sure seems to be played by famous character actor Stephen Root.
After a cut to a different moment, we see Jason and Lucia robbing different places. We even see the duo robbing a diner in a scene that looks like a finished version of the gameplay that leaked all the way back in 2022. It looks a lot better now!
After all that, we cut back to Jason and Lucia as they drive to meet up with a new contact. Lucia is nervous. And rightfully so, it turns out, as the person they’re meeting up with just committed a crime and needs them to get him away from the cops. Jason is handed a rifle and shoots at police vehicles and helicopters as Lucia handles things behind the wheel.
When asked if she’s a professional, she responds, “Of course.” The trio then escapes through the sunny streets of Vice City.
“Did we pass the test?” asks Lucia. “You stayed alive,” replies the new contact before handing them money.
We then get a new montage showing off a lot of the stuff you can do in Vice City, including riding scooters, scuba diving, driving fan boats through swamps, robbing small stores, racing, visiting a strip club, shooting targets, and running into a livestreaming content creator.
We then see Lucia hop off a building and parachute to the ground, before the player in control swaps to Jason, who’s sitting on a couch in a nearby apartment drinking and talking to a friend, in just a few seconds.
The next scene we hop to shows Jason and Lucia dressed up very nicely as they provide security for a rich young dude at a party. We also get our first nice look at Vice City at night, and it looks amazing, with sharp reflections and incredible lighting.
Jason and Lucia split up. Jason goes down the elevator and suggests that Lucia is a talented hand-to-hand fighter after she complains that someone took her guns. This lack of firepower ends up being a problem because, as you might expect in a GTA game, crime happens and people with weapons attack the party and the building.
The combat here looks snappier and more responsive than in previous GTA games, more akin to that in Max Payne 3. At one point, Jason slows down time to get a few headshots.
Meanwhile, on the other floor, we see Lucia escape the armed thugs and get into a fight with a guy in a stairwell. She takes a hard hit to the head. After being strangled for a few moments, she fights off her attacker and grabs his gun.
The gameplay video then ends with the reveal that this was all recorded on a base PlayStation 5. And no, the game isn’t delayed. It is still coming out November 19.
