According to new information from Grand Theft Auto 5 actors Steven Ogg and Ned Luke, GTA 5 was going to have a behind-the-scenes documentary, but it was ultimately scrapped by Rockstar Games. The actors behind Trevor and Michael, respectively, lamented that footage was filmed during the process of building GTA 5, but nothing was ever done with it.

GTA 5 was a monumental achievement for Rockstar Games, and has continued to serve as a flagship title for the developer since. While many fans are more than eager to move on to Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s undeniable that GTA 5 had a massive impact on players and the industry as a whole. Unfortunately, it looks like fans might not ever get the chance to see a glimpse of just how much work went into the game.

Actor Ned Luke speaks out about an AI program copying his vocal performance as Michael De Santa in the highly successful Grand Theft Auto 5.

In a recent interview with Rob Fury, Steven Ogg, Ned Luke, and Solo answered some questions and shared some memories from their time working on Grand Theft Auto 5. During the interview, Ned Luke lamented that Rockstar “had that behind-the-scenes camera going the whole time, but they never did anything with it.” Steven Ogg agreed with his sentiment, noting that they were told that the company was going to use the footage for a documentary of the development of GTA 5. Both actors seemed frustrated by the footage never being utilized for this purpose.

Without confirmation from Rockstar, it’s unclear why the footage was never used as intended. It’s possible that Take-Two Interactive may have decided creating the documentary wasn’t worth the time. After all, a number of planned developments for GTA 5 were scrapped, including several single-player DLCs. In any case, it’s an unfortunate decision, as GTA 5 has since cemented its place in pop culture and gaming history. Many fans would have liked to have seen how the game was put together, as even now, fans continue to eagerly listen in to whatever the actors have to say about their time working on GTA 5.

What’s Next for Grand Theft Auto?

GTA 6 now has a release window of 2025 and has finally teased fans with a trailer. There are still many unanswered questions about how the next game will play out, and players are curious about who is bringing the new protagonists to life, with Troy Baker denying a role as the protagonist. It remains to be seen if the development of GTA 6 also had behind-the-scenes footage recorded, and if so, whether fans ever get to watch it.
