Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking its already enormous marketing campaign to another level, with Rockstar increasingly transforming parts of real-world Miami into Vice City ahead of launch. Rockstar has always gone big with promotion, but the latest GTA 6 campaign goes far beyond conventional billboards, bringing fictional businesses, vehicles, and other elements of Jason and Lucia’s world into reality.

For years, Rockstar barely needed to market GTA 6 at all. Its first trailer more or less became a cultural event in December 2023, followed by another long silence before Rockstar gradually began revealing more of the game. That restraint has disappeared as the November 19 release approaches, with trailers, pre-orders, outdoor advertising, and other promotions now appearing at a much faster pace. Take-Two has even described GTA 6 pre-orders as “unprecedented and astonishing,” although the company has declined to provide an actual number. Rockstar spent years proving that it could generate enormous GTA hype by saying almost nothing, but with launch finally approaching, subtlety appears to be over.

GTA 6 Is Turning Real-Life Miami Into Vice City

Nowhere is that more obvious than Miami, the real-world inspiration for Vice City. Fans on Twitter and Reddit have started uploading images of promotions like a massive illuminated “Welcome to Vice City” sign now atop the Kaseya Center, while Rockstar branding has spread across buses, taxis, beach umbrellas, digital displays, a blimp, and even boats advertising the fictional Vault Nightclub. Real vehicles have also been dressed up as GTA counterparts, including a Corvette styled as a Coquette and a Lamborghini wearing Vice Beach Police livery. Inside the Kaseya Center, the advertising goes even deeper, with a Burger Shot and Cluckin’ Bell that have become real food stands, complete with branded packaging and uniforms.

Rockstar is also filling Miami with advertisements for in-game brands rather than simply plastering the GTA 6 logo everywhere. Weazel News, Chamber 106.6, Fruit, Coil, eCola, Big Chug, Pißwasser, and other in-universe names have appeared throughout the city, while the Miami Heat basketball team will take the idea even further with its November 18 “A Night in Vice City” event. The team is set to play on a custom Vice City court while wearing reimagined uniforms, with themed merchandise also available. Funnily enough, GTA has spent decades parodying American advertising, so it feels fitting that Rockstar is now using its fake ads to sell one of the biggest real entertainment products on the planet.

None of this is likely cheap, although the frequently repeated claims surrounding GTA 6‘s supposed multi-billion-dollar development and marketing budget remain unverified. Rockstar and Take-Two have never publicly disclosed a final budget, making it hard to know exactly how much they’re spending on this campaign. Still, city permits, sports partnerships, enormous physical displays, custom vehicles, restaurant conversions, and promotions spread across South Florida clearly point to a marketing operation on a scale few games could justify. Whatever Rockstar is spending to turn Miami pink and blue, GTA 6 may be one of the rare games with an audience large enough to make even this kind of campaign look proportionate.

That scale makes GTA 6 feel increasingly less like a normal game release and more like a broader cultural event, but any fan who’s been through a Rockstar game marketing cycle could see that coming. But it’s not all just for the sake of GTA 6‘s marketing. Miami officials have also approved another set of large promotional banners, with some permit revenue reportedly going toward a local trail. With weeks still remaining before launch, the line between Rockstar’s fictional Florida and the real one may get even harder to spot.
